Tandem surfing is a hybrid of surfing and acrobatics. It originated in the 1930s in Hawaii when the Waikiki Beach boys would take female tourists for rides on their boards it has since evolved into an international competition sport (run by ITSA) where couples perform complex gymnastics on surf.
