Sarah Nasimiyu is 45 years old and is pictured with her two-year-old Joshua. She has four other children ranging in age from three to thirteen years old. They all work on the dumpsite. She separated from her husband in 2008 because he was always drunk and couldn’t be responsible. She brings Joshua with her to the dumpsite – where she sorts through rubbish in the morning and then sells snacks to the other workers in the afternoon, and has been doing so for four years.
The Mothers who work on Eldoret’s main dump nick named by the locals, ironically, as ‘California’ raise their children in Extreme poverty. The consequences for these children and their parents are tough; with disease, injury, substance abuse and even the threat of violence an everyday reality.
