  • Hostile street architecture designed to prevent homeless people sittind, standing or sleeping in London, England, United Kingdom. Hostile architecture is a controversial urban design trend in which public spaces are constructed or altered to discourage people from using them in a way not intended by the owner. Also known as unpleasant design, defensive architecture, or defensive urban design it is most typically associated with aggression against the homeless in the form of ‘anti-homeless spikes’ studs embedded in flat surfaces to make sleeping rough and impractical. Hostile architecture often targets the citys most vulnerable, both intentionally through anti-loitering and anti-skateboarding measures and unintentionally by making the cityscape hostile to all parts of the public.

  • Old apartment and iron balcony architecture in Lisbon's old Arabic Alfama district. Murals of classical Portuguese figures adorn the plaster walls next to crumbling windows and balconies which have the look of vintage from a former era in Lisbon's capital. Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the Castle of Lisbon and the Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, with many Fado bars and restaurants.

  • Visitors admire the inner circle of Palacio de Carlos V at Alhambra, Granada. The Palace of Charles V is a Renacentist construction in Granada, southern Spain, located on the top of the hill of the Assabica, inside the Nasrid fortification of the Alhambra. It was commanded by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, who wished to establish his residence close to the Alhambra palaces. The plan of the palace is a 63 meter square containing an inner circular patio. This structure, the main Mannerist characteristic of the palace, has no precedent in Renaissance architecture, and places the building in the avant-garde of its time. The circular patio has also two levels. The lower consists of a doric colonnade of conglomerate stone, with an orthodox classical entablature formed of triglyphs and metopes.

  • A tourist stares up to the fine renaissance architecture of the Catholic Marian shrine inside the church of Santa Maria in the Alhambra complex of temples, Granada, Spain. In 1308 the Moorish King Mohamed III built a mezquita in the Alhambra. When the Christians conquered Granada, they destroyed the mezquita and built the Church of Santa Maria de la Encarnacion of the Alhambra. This was a common practice at that time and occurred in many places all over Spain. The church was designated as the first cathedral of Granada. The church was designed by Juan de Herrera in the Renaissance style and was started in 1581 by Ambrosio de Vico and finished in 1617.

  • Brutalist concrete architecture of New Street Station Signal Box in Birmingham, United Kingdom. New Street Station has been at the centre of public attention in recent times, with its extensive redevelopment works in full swing. However, at the heart of it, and often overlooked, sits the Grade II listed signal box on Navigation Street, which houses the centre of all rail operations of the station. The corrugated concrete Brutalist structure may polarise public opinion, but is actually home of one of the city’s most vital and intense infrastructure systems, serving the busiest rail interchange in the UK. Brutalist architecture is a movement in architecture that flourished from the 1950s to the mid-1970s, descending from the modernist architectural movement of the early 20th century.
