  • Hoardings showing as aspirational future near Bristol docks. A young, prosperous woman sits holding a mug of coffee on a street cafe and a fallen fence lies on the cobbled ground. The landscape is bleak, the remains of Victorian and early 20th century warehouses and harbour buildings that are now derelict and partially-demolished which are now due to be removed from the city's history, to be replaced by regenerated harbour view flats and apartments - homes for the wealthy middle-classes. The developer claims they are bringing the harbour area back to life but the days of tall ships importing trade from around the world (including slaves in the 18th century).

  • Families watch the mass lift-off by balloons at Bristols annual fiesta at Ashton Court, UK. Taking off into early morning summer skies above England's southwest City, the airships rise from the heat of hot air burners. Crowds from across the city arive with BBQs and picnics and children to sit and wait for the green smoke that signals a Go. Once airbourne, the balloons start to climb only a short distance, to land a few hundred metres away on this particular morning's stll air conditions. The 37th Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is billed as Europe’s largest (and free) ballooning event. Bristol's local ballooning entrepreneur hero is Don Cameron whose balloons are known worldwide.

  • A Samaritans suicide 0845 helpline sign on Brunel's Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol. Samaritans is a confidential emotional support service for anyone in the UK and Ireland. The service is available 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those that may lead to suicide. Across the UK, one can call Samaritans on 08457 90 90 90 for the price of a local call. Samaritans was founded in 1953 by Chad Varah, a vicar in the London Diocese. His inspiration came from an experience he had had some years earlier as a young curate in the Diocese of Lincoln. He had taken a funeral for a girl of fourteen who had killed herself because she feared she had contracted an STI. The movement grew rapidly and within ten years there were 40 branches and there are now 201 branches across the UK and Ireland.
