  • The Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti performs in London during the free Party in the Park concert to celebrate his 30 years in opera. A crowd of 100,000 stood in the London rain to watch Pavarotti perform 20 arias by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and Wagner. VIPs the Princess of Wales, Prime Minister John Major and Michael Caine got soaked in heavy rain along with everyone else sitting on the grass cowering beneath tarpaulins. We see the rotund Operatic maestro in full flow, belting out an aria while dressed in formal tails and wastecoat and holding his customary scarf that he uses to dab the sweat from his brow. Pavarotti helped bring an otherwise high-brow artform to the ordinary Man after the BBC used his rendition of Nessun Dorma to theme their World Cup TV coverage. This lead the way to Opera reaching the Common Man in Britain.

  • Celebrated grave for the Dublin-born playright and known homosexual, Oscar Wilde in the Pere Lachaise cemetery, Paris. 19th century Irish playwright and wit Oscar Wilde once quipped: "One can survive anything these days, except death, and live down anything except a good reputation." He died in Paris at only 46, impoverished and broken down from years of being villified by Victorian society. He was buried at Père Lachaise with a modest tomb, but a memorial was later erected. Today the monument is covered in lipstick marks left by ardent visitors. Alfred the Great (849 – 899) was King of Wessex from 871 to 899. Alfred successfully defended his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, and by his death had become the dominant ruler in England. He is the only English monarch to be accorded the epithet "the Great". The Thornycroft statue was unveiled during the millenary celebrations of Alfred's death.

  • Five elderly women on-lookers are lined against a wall outside the famous Ascot race course on Ladies' Day, the annual event on the English sporting and social calendar in June. Each are standing in order of size, from tallest (who holds a Tesco supermarket bag) to smallest and watch as two posh couples arrive for the day's racing dressed in showy dresses for the ladies and the men in formal top hat and tails. The posh lady in the front is in yellow and holds on to her straw hat on this windy summer day. Each wears their red Ascot badges allowing them entry to this exclusive royal event attended by the Royal Family and the hoi polloi of English society. We see the two sides of the class system but it is a humerous scene. There is good nature between the two groups with smiles exchanged with one couple but discomfort from those behind.

  • The England footballer Wayne Rooney's faces are seen wrapped up in polythene, sold outside a shop near St. Paul's Cathedral where merchandise accessories are being sold off cheap outside sports shop in City of London. It is a few days after the England team's defeat by Germany in the quarter-finals of the South African World Cup and while English flags are stored away in time for the next St. George's Day when nationalism and patriotic emotions are showed on homes, in streets and on working mans’ vans, these Rooney face masks are now seen as passé, unsellable at current prices so their value has been reduced from just 10 pence. Golden boy Rooney is still a commodity that Manchester United earn millions from – their merchandising opportunities reach a fever levels at times of premiership and international matches.
