  • Commuters reading the Evening News on a Southern region train delayed in Charing Cross station. Evening News, formerly known as The Evening News, was an evening newspaper published in London from 1881 to 1980, reappearing briefly in 1987. It became highly popular under the control of the Harmsworth brothers. For a long time it maintained the largest daily sale of any evening newspaper in London. After financial struggles and falling sales it was eventually merged with its long-time rival the Evening Standard in 1980.   • A discarded broken umbrella and a person walking past with a brolley shop bag in Charing Cross Road, central London. Coincidentally, the woman carries a shopping bag for a London branch of Hackett whose logo is a bowler hat and pair of crossed umbrellas, the sign of quality and Britishness. Someone has thrown the item on the ground, partially-collapsed but now forgotten - the remnant of a person's wet day in the capital. Transport continues too and the red London bus edges past in heavy traffic in the borough of Westminster.

  • Anti capitalists / anarchists go on the rampage through central London on the back of the peaceful TUC protest march. The masked demonstrators ran a twisting route through the capital confusing the police and creating a situation which was very difficult to manage. The protesters attacked banks, shops and hotels, and the police in riot gear fought  face to face with them as they were pelted with ammonia, paint and fireworks loaded with coins. Here HSBC Bank on Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road is being smashed.

Followed by crowds of angry protesters and a Legal Observer who was talking with the police about their tactics and the rights of the demonstrators. At this point the police were arresting / searching and detaining people they suspected were part of anarchist groups determined to create havoc in London on the day.
