  • Pigeon pest controller, Sue Van Vynck releases Harriet, her Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) to scare away the local pigeon population. The ancient sport of Falconry has become today’s humane pest control of choice, particularly as costs falls. Once a pigeon population has been scared away, it requires only a token hawk presence to keep it away. Van Vynck Bird Control is a specialist company providing over 25 years, a range of environmental services dealing with nuisance bird management. They are pioneers of specialist techniques such as the use of predatory species (such as falconry) to displace and interrupt behavioural patterns as well as offering a complete range of physical deterrents. Here at Broadgate the nuisance was pigeons and Harriet leaves Sue's gloved hand to patrol the architecture of this 32 acres (129,499 m2) office and retail space.

  • Awaiting the call-up from superior officers, a phalanx of German riot police stand in their ranks, with shields resting on the ground of a central Berlin park. Their orders will be to keep control of protesters in the former eastern sector of the German city, in the months after the fall of the Wall and the communist state, the GDR (German Democratic Republic) or DDR. Because Germany is now one country (though reunification itself has yet to happen), West German officers of the Bundespolizei (BPOL) which is the uniformed federal police force of Germany, wait patiently for orders from their western masters. The Bundespolizei consists of around 40,000 personnel, from border control, aviation wings, civil servants, immigration services and riot control (Beweissicherungs and Festnahmeeinheit).

  • Military air traffic controller Flight Lieutenant Barrie Robinson is on duty in the control tower at RAF Scampton, home base of the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team. RAF controllers liaise with civilian air authorities to ensure safe travel for any aircraft using their airspace, manning communications and airfield safety, the officer wears a headset with which to speak to air crew and ground-based personnel. Scampton is not the busy airfield that other stations are where larger squadrons are based but the Red Arrows fly their training sorties from here up to six times a day in the winter months then use this as a base from which to fly their summer air shows.

  • A lady employee of Delacre Biscuits sorts through sub-standard product from rows of steadily moving, freshly-produced biscuits on the conveyor belt at the company factory at Lambermont, near Liege, southern Belgium. Seated opposite a colleague also dressed in white overall and hair net, both women concentrate on the job, removing the snacks that fail quality control for whatever reason means the biscuit is unfit for sale. The biscuits are from the Moments range created by McVitie’s, the British company owned by United Biscuits. Multitudes of these snacks are manufactured before export across Europe. Delacre Biscuits is a subsidiary of United Biscuits having been making biscuits since Brussels pharmacist Charles Delacre decided to sell chocolate in 1870, which was then regarded as a medicinal tonic.

  • A theatrical joke about bureaucracy between French and British comedians at an event to mark the opening of the Channel Tunnel produces this quirky scene where each country's officials are seated at a long table, dressed in British flags, to symbolise the controls on human traffic that will soon pass through the tunnel beneath the sea between England and France, the first physical link between these two land masses since the Ice Age. Wearing smart uniforms, French immigration police and Gendarmes sit among British customs and immigration officials who, rather comically wear yellow hard hats because Health and Safety laws make the wearing of protective headgear compulsory on construction sites. A frontier control point notice stands for the benefit of viewers who might otherwise be guessing what is going on.

  • From the darkened room of Coventry council's CCTV control room, we see over the shoulder of a council camera operator spying on innocent pedestrians and a view of a shopping precinct. Citizens and passers-by go about their own business unaware that their movements are being watched by camera lenses and their human eyes and security personnel. Other monitor screens date the pictures as 24th May 1999 when Coventry was the most-watched city in Britain. The council controversially maintains it deters petty crime but the population disagrees, saying it is obtrusive and symptomatic of a Big Brother-type Orwellian police state.
