Warm light from inside the house contrasts with blue winter light at dusk a few miles south of parliament in Westminster. Other homes are in darkness. It is late one evening in central London, in a suburb known as Herne Hill, SE24 in the borough of Lambeth. We see across the metropolis from quiet and expensive period homes, whose owners would typically be white middle-class, across to the blocks of flats (apartments) in the Loughborough Estate, a far rougher location for street gangs and high crime rates.

Nailed into a home-made board attached to the wall of this shed, the tools have their own specialplace, marked by drawn shapes of each item allowing easy replacement after use. Hammers, chisels, screw drivers, hacksaws, alan keys and spanners all their own location giving the idea of a well-organised workshop.

  • Having packed nearly all their possessions into a removal company's truck, a family have left this terraced house apart from a telephone that sits on the carpet in the middle of the carpet, on a ground floor home in Herne Hill, South London England UK. The family have taken the precaution of using a professional removal company, rather than trying to move themselves,  and we see a yellow storage van parked outside in the street ready to drive  the house's contents to the new property. This family home is now empty awaiting its new occupants who will soon arrive with their own items.

The sash-style window is up and open so that fresh air helps dry this coat of paint. Furniture has been cleared from the room - a back of the house upstairs bathroom.

  • An individual is selling their flat privately for £10,000 + cash on the A202 Peckham Road. Without using an established high street estate agent (realtor) the owner called Nathan has left his own sign attached to railings outside a block of flats on this main road between Camberwell and Peckham in south London. He describes the property as a 2 bed apartment and unusually for London, complete with garage space.

  • Decorator and part-time chimney sweep Alan Squires prepares to apply another coat of emulsion paint to the exterior walls of a cottage called Burnside in the tiny hamlet of Hallin, Waternish, on the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. With his shadow looming large on the newly-painted off-white pebbledash that is rendered a warm orange in the low sunlight, Alan walks with his long roller after a day's decorating in this beautiful place near Dunvegan. Alan is an Englishman who came to Skye in 1987 for the community spirit. "everybody knows everybody' he says though admits that southerners come from the south in search of an idyllic lifestyle but harsh winters often send them back to warmer climates. Alain's fresh paint therefore needs to dry before winter weather blows in from the Atlantic. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

  • During the Jewish festival of Purim a group of Orthodox Jewish boys from the Viznitz Yeshiva (school) in fancy dress visit local businessmen to collect money for their school. The group perform tasks for cash, here the Purim Rabbi attached a mezuzah (a prayer scroll) to a new doorway to the garden.

A theme of soapy bubbles and a sign selling £5 washes advertises this business located in a Victorian railway arch where many businesses work from.

  • In a field at the town of Boofzheim in the eastern French Alsace region, an elderly Frenchman harvests some of his self-grown carrots crop. Having left his old bicycle standing at the kerb of a narrow access road and in front of a field full of maturing maize, he bends down with much effort to dig in his fork or spade into the rich Alsace earth and lift out his vegetables to take home. This landscape is typically French or German (Alsace borders the western side of Germany and saw much tragic action in WW2) where maize is a nutritious foodstuff for cattle and also for ducks and geese who are force-fed it locally in the making of fois gras and pate.

  • Parked on the apron at Paris Orly Airport, a lone pilot of the French national airline Air France, leans out of his right-hand seat's cockpit window of his Boeing 777-328/ER aircraft (F-GSQT). It is a bright morning at this international hub for Air France and without help from ground staff, the silver-haired gentleman who may be the captain and commander of the aircraft (because of age and seat position) has decided to get on with the job of cleaning his window himself much like a driver wiping away flies from his car windscreen. Here however, this chore being performed approximately six meters off the ground so safety is vital - just as a clear front view for the flight-deck crew before their flight. Attached to the plane is the mobile walkway, the air bridge, that awaits boarding passengers but no 'ramp agent' is below.

  • A young three year-old boy has his hair cut by his mother in the family South London home. Lifting his hair with her fingers, the mum snips with a pair of scissors. While lifting her left elbow to gain the right angle of her cutting, we see her holding a comb in her mouth. The boy's elder sister looks on offering unhelpful comments which will eventually lead to an exchange of unkind words between the siblings while their mother concentrates hard on not making a mess of the kid's haircut. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • An elderly gentleman prunes his precious crop of fresh red roses from his front garden that sits astride the small River Wandle at Carshalton, south London. trimming off their heads, he s dressed in a straw hat and white apron. He is a very active gardener, the nurturing of plants and flowers being his passion now that he is of retirement age after a lifetime of work. Now he enjoys the rewards of his labours from mother earth in this lush plot of his that looks every bit the perfect English cottage garden despite it being in an urban inner-city.

  • A cheeky young boy climbs over a back yard gate armed with a homemade bow and arrow in a back street in Liverpool, England. His homemade toy is the antithesis of what a wealthy lad might wish for in 21st century Britain when gadgets were all a kid wants and games outside have become rare and uncool. But this is still the early 1990s in times of recession when a make do and mend philosophy means families improvise with what they have and wealth is out of reach for many.
