  • With orange sparks falling away below, a shipbuilder welds while standing on a scaffolding gantry on the hull of a large German ferry at the Polish Gdansk shipyard - once known as the Lenin Shipyard but still the largest of its kind in modern Poland. The grimy and hazardous working conditions make for a dangerous environment in which to work and the worker wears a protective hood on his head. Here in 1980 the union Solidarity (Solidarnosc) was conceived and was partly responsible for a growing dissent against Communist rule, ultimately contributing towards the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lech Walesa started his political career as an electrical technician here, going on to lead Solidarity and then to become President of a democratic Poland. Today Gdansk is a major industrial city and shipping port.

  • Mothers sit with their babies in pushchairs on park benches in the Silesian industrial town of Zabrze. A mining town known formerly as Hindenburg until 1945, under Stalinist thought, miners were considered a “working class elite” and were rewarded with higher wages and better social benefits but after communism, Zabrze has a high rate among mother of Ovarian Cancer because of the pollution, caused by the large concentration of industry, the triangle of land between Zabrze, Chorzów, and Bytom has locally been known as 'death triangle'. Since the collapse of communism in 1989, the environmental situation has steadily been improving due the restructuring of the Silesian industry although more than 250,000 jobs have been lost in coal mining since the reintroduction of capitalism. At the same time, enterprises are enjoying enormous profits.

  • A spread of old Polish Zloty bank notes are spread out in the hands of a private market trader in Central Warsaw. His arms appear from the bottom left of frame and we can see a dozen or so notes of 2000 and 5000 and other denominations in an arc, held together with both thumbs. In the back ground and out of focus is the hustle and bustle of a summer's day at this market at a football stadium where Polish citizens come to sell and buy their possessions in the hope of making a little money to support meagre incomes. Women are inspecting clothing and materials on a stall in the open-air, under a bright sun. On the front-facing note is the medieval ruler Mieszko I though these notes were phased out in 1995 when hyperinflation forced, the currency to undergo redenomination.

  • It is 10.15 in the morning and a mother and her daughter have crossed a road in Ruda Slaska, Poland, while an older lady has paused on the zebra crossing. It is a dark and gloomy day in this heavily polluted, industrial town in southern Poland. The local employer is the Huta Pokoj SA steel mill that dominates the landscape, rising as a filthy tower that makes the air quality so poor that respiratory deceases are common, with soot present in the atmosphere for children to breathe. The environmental impact of 1990s post-Stalinist Polish heavy industry is evident. The day is damp, depressing and unhealthy with a truck's headlights on as pedestrians stand on the roadside, wait at the bus stop or cycle past on the pavement.
