  • Seen from a low angle at the side of the track, near where grass and daisies grow, a speeding Eurostar TGV train hurtles towards the viewer, blurring as it comes towards us. This is the Kent countryside, otherwise known as the fertile Garden of England, and the route for high-speed trains that ply back and forth between western Europe and London St Pancras. This international passenger service was made possible by the completion of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 operating eighteen-carriage Class 373 trains which run at up to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph) on a network of high-speed lines. Eurostar is operated by the national railway companies of France and Belguim, SNCF and SNCB, and by Eurostar (UK) Ltd (EUKL), a subsidiary of London and Continental Railways (LCR) which in turn also owns the high-speed infrastructure and stations on the British side.

  • This memorial has been placed where a young man called Michael died beneath the TGV and Eurostar train overpass at Goussainville, France. If we drove past this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be an anonymous statistic but flowers are left to die too and touching poems and dedications are written by family and loved-ones.   • The new Channel Tunnel rail terminal under construction in the Kent countryside at Folkestone in 1989. A workman walks over part of the structure that will in the future, take the Eurostar and Shuttle trains through this portal underneath the town of Folkestone and on beneath the English Channel to the French coast. The technique is known as cut and cover. Eleven tunnel boring machines cut through chalk marl to construct two rail tunnels and a service tunnel. Tunnelling commenced in 1988, and the tunnel began operating in 1994. In 1985 prices, the total construction cost was £4.650 billion (equivalent to £11 billion today), an 80% cost overrun. At the peak of construction 15,000 people were employed with daily expenditure over £3 million. Ten workers were killed during construction between 1987 and 1993, most in the first few months of boring.

The terminals are unique facilities designed to transfer vehicles from the motorway onto trains at a rate of 700 cars and 113 heavy vehicles per hour.

meask-wearing visitor walks beneath the statue entitled The Meeting Place by British artist Paul Day, on 17th March 2020, in London, England. The Meeting Place is a 9-metre high, 20-tonne bronze statue that stands at the south end of the upper level of St Pancras evoking the romance of travel through the depiction of a couple locked in an amorous embrace. Its cost is reported to be £1 million. St. Pancras is the London terminus for Eurostar services to mainland Europe.

  • The new artwork entitled I Want My Time With You by British Britpop artist Tracy Emin hangs over the main concourse at St. Pancras Station, on 10th April 2018, in London, England. In the sixth year of the Terrace Wires Commission - and in celebration of the 150th anniversary of St Pancras International and the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts, at one of Londons mainline station, the London hub for Eurostar - the 20 metre-long greeting to commuters reads I Want My Time With You and Emin thinks that arriving by train and being met by a lover as they put their arms around them, is very romantic. The Brexit-opposing artist also said she wanted to make a statement that reaches out to everybody from Europe arriving in to London.

  • From Cheriton Hill, we see the new Channel Tunnel rail terminal under construction in the Kent countryside at Cheriton, Folkestone in 1989. The tunnel now carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, Eurotunnel Shuttle roll-on/roll-off vehicle transport. The terminals sites are at Cheriton (Folkestone in the United Kingdom) and Coquelles (Calais in France). The terminals are unique facilities designed to transfer vehicles from the motorway onto trains at a rate of 700 cars and 113 heavy vehicles per hour.
