  • Police on patrol in down-town Port Au Prince, their  tough style of policing is controversial. On Tuesday 12th of January at 16.53pm local time the biggest Earthquake to hit Haiti for 200 years struck with devastating force. 230,000 people were killed, 300,000 injured and 1.2 million left needing emergency shelter. Survivors have lost family, homes, livelihoods and essential services. Hospitals, schools and government buildings were also destroyed'. These pictures are of the survivors three weeks later.

  • In pouring rain, United States Air Force pilots stand like canmouflaged statues in the undergrowth near Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. They are listening to a USAF survival instructor giving them advice about another challenge they are about to face, a few hundred yards ahead in the woods, so they listen intently in the saturatedconditions. In the future any one of them may be shot down behind enemy lines and need to use the lessons passed-on here to help facilitate their rescue by US forces. One pilot who passed this course in 1991, himself a Spokane-born boy, was F-16 pilot Scott O'Grady. He put his skills learned here to the test while evading Serb forces before being airlifted to safety and a hero's Presidential welcome.

  • Displayed on a table at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, peaked caps of the former East German (DDR in German) border police are on sale in orderly rows for the sake of tourists to this German city. The border troops of the German Democratic Republic (Grenztruppen), were a military force of the GDR and the primary force guarding the Berlin Wall and the border between East and West Germany. The Border Troops numbered at their peak approximately 47,000 troops and other than the Soviet Union, no other Warsaw Pact country had such a large border guard force. In all, 1,065 persons were killed along the GDR's frontiers and coastline, often by the border guards. The East Germany state existed from 7 October 1949 until 3 October 1990 and was a potent symbol of a divided Europe during the Cold War.

  • Joining with the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team on the far left, are the smoke trails of forty leading European display aircraft: Spanish Patrulla Aguila; Italian Frecce Tricolori; French Breitling Jet Team and the Swiss Patrouille Suisse. All flew together in the clear, blue alpine skies on a spectacular fly-past at the Payerne Air 04 show, Switzerland. The two-day festival at the Swiss airfield is home of the Swiss Air Force who host the cream of international aerobatic display flying every September to 275,000 spectators over a weekend. European display teams and air forces gathered to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Swiss military aviation. Flying on the far left here, the Red Arrows have performed over 4,000 shows in 52 countries since 1965.

The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft. It was developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) from the 1980s to the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas; the company later merged with Boeing. The C-17 is used for rapid strategic airlift of troops and cargo to main operating bases or forward operating bases throughout the world. It can also perform tactical airlift, medical evacuation and airdrop missions. The Farnborough International Airshow is a seven-day international trade fair for the aerospace industry and held every two years in mid-July at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, England known as the home of British aviation, held since there since 1948.

Walking away from the red Hawk jet aircraft in which he has been flown in the rear seat, the VIP smiles after the exhilarating training flight. Their purpose is not simply to entertain summer seaside crowds but also as an RAF recruiting tool and for UK defence export advertising. Air Chief Marshal Sir Graham Eric Stirrup GCB, AFC, FRAeS, FCMI, RAF (born 4 December 1949), usually referred to as Sir Jock Stirrup, was a fast jet pilot, and is now a senior Royal Air Force commander. He was the Chief of the Air Staff  (CAS) from 2003 to 2006 and Chief of the Defence Staff.

  • Royal Air Force officers formally await visiting foreign dignitaries at the BAE Systems stand during the bi-annual aerospace industry expo at the Farnborough airshow in southern England. As an important trading partner, both the RAF and BAE Systems present a united front in the marketplace, each helping the other to promote the UK-PLC  brand and urging foreign governments to buy British. In the background is a BAE Systems Hawk attack and trainer jet aircraft used by the RAF and airforces in gthe middle-east. Operators of the Hawk include the Royal Air Force (notably the Red Arrows display team) as well a considerable number of foreign military operators. The Hawk is still in production in the UK and under licence in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with over 900 Hawks sold to 18 operators around the world.

After arriving back on the ground and their Paris hotel, the British officer and his team has ended France's Bastille Day parade. They were chosen by the French authorities to close the fly-pasts. British armed forces paraded in the historic parade for the first time. Under blue skies on a perfect summer day, the squadron lined up in their classic fly-past 'V-shape' called 'Big Battle', following the straight line of the Champs Elysees then eastwards over the Parisian suburbs. Personnel from four British military units were present and French Air Force jets performed their own fly-past to open the parade, while the British Hawk jets of the Red Arrows had the honour of completing it.

  • An assistant lighthouse keeper records the wind speed at St Catherine's Lighthouse, Isle of Wight, UK.  Before automation, the lighthouse had been a weather reporting station for the Meteorological Office for some years; the keepers made hourly reports which included the temperature, humidity, cloud height and formation and wind direction and force. Following de-manning of the lighthouse an automatic weather reporting station was installed which sends details of the weather conditions to the Met. Office. St Catherine's Lighthouse was automated in 1997 and all Trinity House lighthouses have been automated since November 1998.

Two blue arrows point towards each other to show that the aircraft’s canopy is securely closed and ready for flight. Painted the Squadron’s famous red, we can also see the rivets which can be turned by specially-designed screwdrivers that help gain access to internal technology. The Red Arrows Hawks power the team throughout their calendar of appearances at air shows and fly-pasts across the UK and a few European venues. Since 1965 the squadron have flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries and are an important part of Britain's summer events where aerobatics aircraft perform their manoeuvres in front of massed crowds.

They crew are travelling between Guernsey and Jersey in the Channel Islands  where the team are about to perform another of the air shows they appear at. Since 1965 the squadron have flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries. During a forthcoming calendar of appearances at air shows and fly-pasts across the UK and a few European venues they are an important recruiting tool for future personnel – of pilots and ground-based trades.
