  • With dozens of deck chairs behind him, a sleeping middle-aged man lies bare-chested with a flat cap on his head and with his socks on as all Englishmen tend to do during a summer heat wave. He has chosen a spot in a near-empty Hyde Park in central London - an oasis of calm amid a bustling city – where a seat in a striped deck chair can be rented for a few Pounds for the day and one can snooze topless without being bothered and one’s stresses of daily life can be momentarily forgotten. With one hand resting on his leg, the other reaches down to hold on to his shoulder bag which is in the shade on the short grass.

  • Wellington Arch, a 19th-century memorial arch topped by a bronze sculpture, Hyde Park Corner on 16th April 2020 in London, United Kingdom. Normally crowded with people London is like a ghost town as workers stay home under lockdown during the Coronavirus pandemic. During the second half of the 1820s, the Commissioners of Woods and Forests and the King resolved that Hyde Park, and the area around it, must be renovated to the extent of the splendour of rival European capital cities, and that the essence of the new arrangement would be a triumphal approach to Buckingham Palace. Changes to the road layout in the 1990s reinstated a route between Hyde Park and the Green Park for pedestrians, cyclists and horseriders using surface-level crossings.

  • Portrait of Mary Olivari, a member of the Serpentine Swimming Club, Hyde Park, London, UK. The Serpentine Lake is situated in Hyde Park, London’s largest central open space. The Serpentine Swimming Club was formed in 1864 ‘to promote the healthful habit of bathing in open water throughout the year’. Its headquarters were beneath an old elm tree on the south side of the lake, a wooden bench for clothing being the only facility. At this time London was undergoing rapid expansion and Hyde Park was now in the centre of a densely populated built up area and provided a place of relaxation to its urbanised masses. Now, the club has its own (somewhat spartan) changing facilities and members are permitted by the Royal Parks to swim in the lake any morning before 09:30. They race every Saturday morning throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

  • An eccentric middle-aged man rests his legs on his bicycle while -open mouthed and snoring - snatches forty winks on a striped deck chair in London's Hyde Park, England. We look down on the grass which is still green and lush on this summer's day in the heart of the city. He is wearing a flat cap with trousers (pants) tucked in his socks for his next bicycle journey. He is a quintissentially English sunbather enjoying a quiet snooze in a public park open space.

  • A pair of awkwardly splayed legs disappear into the cold, murky waters of the Serpentine Lake in London's Hyde Park. Having just dived head-first off a platform that juts out into the lake, the person is half in and half out and the splash is frozen in time. He or she is in incopetent diver with such ungainly plunge into the waters. It is otherwise a quiet moment. The water is largely undisturbed apart from the dive and buoy markers float to for a boundary line to keep rowing boats and bathers apart. This bathing area is where the normally busy Serpentine Swimming Club have the use of this Royal lake known as Lansbury's Lido. It is now normally open only in the summer, but one traditional event occurs each year on New Year's Day, when the ice is broken and brave bathers dive into the cold waters of the lake. The Serpentine will be used for the swimming leg of the triathlon at the London 2012 Olympics. The Serpentine gets its name from its supposedly snakelike, curving shape. It was formed in 1730 when Queen Caroline, wife of George II, ordered the damming of the River Westbourne and other natural ponds in Hyde Park.

  • Pope Benedict XVI leads Mass at the Hyde Park rally during his papal tour of Britain 2010, the first visit by a pontiff since 1982. Taxpayers footed the £10m bill for non-religious elements, which largely angered a nation still reeling from the financial crisis. Pope Benedict XVI is the head of the biggest Christian denomination in the world, some one billion Roman Catholics, or one in six people. In Britain there are about five million Catholics but only a quarter of Catholics regularly attend Sunday Mass and some churches have closed owing to spending cuts.
