  • Wearing a company wastecoat and blue rubber gloves, the uniform of a Holiday Inn employee, a man of Black ethnicity bends forward to wipe the glass revolving doors at the entrance of this hotel in Paris. Nearby is the man's trolley containing janitorial cleaning products such as a mop and bucket, towels, cloth rolls, atomiser sprays, detergents and tissues needed to maintain the high standards of this motel chain. Coincidentally, a customer is also bending down to re-arrange something in her baggage and leaning at the same angle as the cleaner.

  • Leaning against the side wall of the eighteenth-century Stein Inn in the tiny Loch-side hamlet of Stein, Waternish, on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, a road-racing bicycle stands beneath a prominent three-letter sign saying 'Inn'. The image is in shadow and therefore monotone, with little colour except for the faint blue that is seen above from a fading sky. The wall is painted white and the word in block capitals is in black. The image is clean and simple without confusing elements or messages. The Inn itself is the oldest on Skye and is one of renowned travel writer's Alastair Sawday's special places to stay and which boasts 99 Malt Whiskies behind the counter.

  • Original 'Blues brother' style Dodge Monaco police car at the Shack Up Inn, Clarksdale. If you want to explore Clarksdale and the Blues country in true retro fashion the best place to do so is by staying at the Shack Up Inn. In The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America, author Nicholas Lemman describes how, on Oct. 2, 1944, a crowd of 3,000 people quietly watched the first public demonstration of the mechanical cotton picker at Hopson's plantation in Clarksdale. At best, wrote Lemman, a skilled field hand could pick 20 pounds of cotton in an hour; the mechanical picker picked 1,000 pounds. Hopson calculated that a bale of cotton (500 pounds) cost $39.41 to pick by hand and $5.26 by machine. It wasn't too hard to foresee the future.

  • An estate agents sign outside the Bull Inn, a property in the village of wool town Cavendish, on 10th July 2020, in Lavenham, Suffolk, England. Cavendish was home to Sir John Cavendish, the ancestor of the Dukes of Devonshire, who was involved in suppressing the Peasants Revolt. Wat Tyler, the peasants leader, was arrested by William Walworth, the Mayor of London, for threatening King Richard II in 1381. The wool trade was already present by the 13th century, steadily expanding as demand grew. By the 1470s Suffolk produced more cloth than any other county.

  • Park Inn Palace Hotel and seafront overview at Southend-on-sea, Essex. The town could be described as run down as while there are some signs of affluence, these are few and far between. The predominant atmosphere is quite rough feeling and quite poor. Southend is a seaside resort that is very popular with people from the East side of London due to it's close proximity, just an hour away by train along the Thames Gateway. With the decline of seaside resorts, from the 1960s much of the centre was developed for commerce and many of the original features were destroyed through redevelopment or neglect.

  • High in the Nepali Himalayan foothills, travellers may be greeted by the welcoming relief of a group of mountain inns and hotels offering lodging to weary legs after many hours walking uphill in this gruelling landscape. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • High above the streets of London's Holborn, we see the sign for the Olde Cock Tavern, one of the city's old inns from the 16th century. Ye Olde Cock Tavern is a public house on London's Fleet Street. Originally built before the 17th century, it was rebuilt, including the interior (which is thought to include work by carver Grinling Gibbons) on the other side of the road in the 1880s when a branch of the Bank of England was built where it stood. However, in the 1990s a fire broke out and destroyed many of the original ornaments, and the building has since gone through a restoration using photographs. It has been frequented by Samuel Pepys, Alfred Tennyson and Charles Dickens

  • Lens flare from setting sun between layers of cloud over inner-city south London rooftops. As the sun sinks inn the winter sky, over the inner-city of Britain's capital, we see a variety of eras in the architecture of urban housing: From Edwardian period in the foreground to the tower blocks from the 60s in the distance. A warm glow of light flares from the camera lens to give an almost cosy feel to the landscape while giving a sense of raw cold on this April evening.

  • This black and white scene is in a City of London side street where a bicycle parked on a parking pole at a kerbside has somehow fallen over in the gutter. Fittingly, the parking bay is for specifically for a disabled motorist and that word has been stencilled in bold white lettering on the wet road surface after a rain shower. The pavement and tarmac glisten making it slippery but the bike has been left and there is no-one in this scene. Reflected inn the puddle is the modern architecture of the office building, also seen rising from street level.
