• Nike advertising runner runs along a barrier near unsuspecting people. The video advert with the slogan 'Just Do It" with a woman running across the screen makes for an optical illusion of sorts and a strange urban scene. London, UK.

 • Police officers on duty including Commander Salah Mohamed, Islamiedin second Lieutenant and Abdullah second Lieutenant. They are not permitted to talk to the press.

One of the main problems for the police force, is overcoming corruption. Just before this photograph was taken a man pulled over and handed six rolls of toilet paper to the commander. The police hadn’t been paid for two months, so from the very smallest amounts to much larger sums, corruption is a way of getting by.

Experienced fixer, Zia Haidary elaborates: “If he had not been paid for two months, why is he still doing his job? He was fooling around, doing nothing then stopping people and cashing in on the bribes. My neighbour was arrested, he is a drug dealer. The police found 6kg of heroin and an AK47 in his house. The next day he is out of police custody - How? It is corrupt. The police here are uneducated boys who cannot find work. If you ask them to write their name, they can’t do it –they’re just really good at shooting.”

 • Two pensioners and friends in Stratford, East London. June Sheridan (right) and Margaret Pavey (left) both live in the East End of Londno, and have done all their lives. June says "It's horrible, everything is changing and it lways affects the poor not the rich. Everything is going up in price, there is nothiing that isn't £3-8. Where would I be without my daughter to help, and buy me lunch. If I didn't have her, I'd have to move away." Margaret says "Every time you go to the shops everyting has gone up, and not just by 1 or 2 pence, but 10p, 50p. Where do they think pensioners get their money from? Nothing they spend is on us, it's just the Olympics an we won't even be able to go." This is a relatively poor area of London, but in recent years has seen much regeneration, the construction of a major transport hub and various shopping complexes. Stratford is adjacent to the London Olympic Park and is currently experiencing regeneration and expansion linked to the 2012 Summer Olympics. (Photo by Mike Kemp/For The Washington Post)

In signature make up and wearing a t-shirt of her image, he said "It's destroyed me. It's killed me. We hadn't seen too much of her in the press recently so thought things were alright, and now this, she's died. I don't know what to do, how I can make it better." Brandon had first seen Winehouse at his first ever gig just aged 12 years old. It was announced that the tragic singer had died on 23rd July 2011. The music world has been paying tribute to singer Amy Winehouse, 27, who was found dead at her London home following years of drug and alcohol abuse largely attributed to her troubled character and fame.

 • Three young British Asians pose in the street to show their gangland signs in Southall, west London. "Throwing up" a gang sign (e.g., "Stacking," "walk") with the hands is one of the most known and obvious forms of "claiming." It is used in many situations where other identifiers may not be possible or appropriate, and it can also show that a gang member is in the area to "do business" as opposed to just passing through. Usually these signs are made by formation of the fingers on one or both hands to make some sort of symbol or letter.

 • We are looking from behind a group of red uniformed meat market traders who are manhandling joints of pork from the back of a meat wagon at Macau's main meat market, on the Rua Sul do Mercado de Sao Domingos, just off the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, in Central Macau. The men have on hooded red tunics that hide the bloodstains of dead animal carcasses, a very practical choice of colour (color). One man has half a pig on his shoulders while another holds a leg in his left hand. The animal carcasses look heavy and they are both struggling under their weight. There is much more meat to be offloaded from the truck and the men queue up to take their turn and remove them for sale inside the market building. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.

 • Mother Louise Irwin-Ryan with her son Kiefer (8, wearing a red Liverpool Football Club kit) spending a day out together in Camden Town, North London. Kiefer wants to look at the football strips and asks if his mum can buy him the 2011 shorts. His mother explains that the 2009 shorts will have to do because they just can't afford it. Louise is on various benefits to help support her family income, and housing, although recent government changes to benefits may affect her family drastically, possibly meaning they may have to move out of London. Louise Ryan was born on the Wirral peninsula in 1970. She moved to London with her family in 1980. Having lived in both Manchester and Ireland, she now lives permanently in North London with her husband and two children. Through the years Louise has battled to recover from a serious motorcycle accident in 1992 and has recently been diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder. When it comes to the preparation and showing, Taylor says, 'I do the washing and she does the plaiting and the ribbons - she is the artistic one. 'Mind you, it's not easy. Billy was clean when we brought him here, but he just lay down in something horrid while I wasn't watching. That's why I'm working late, cleaning him to get him ready for tomorrow. Billy is a family member as far as we're concerned, but I called him all the names under the sun when I saw how dirty he'd got.' The Great Yorkshire Show, one of Britain's biggest agricultural shows, is famous for its competitive displays of livestock. The event, established in 1837, attracts over 125 000 visitors a year and has over 10 000 entries to its pedigree competitions ranging from pigeons and rabbits to bulls and shire horses.

 • A young protester plays with a joke severed hand unaware of the funny yet gruesome nature of what he is doing. Stoke Newington Zombie-a-thon. Hundreds of people joined together in protest in North London to demonstrate against the planned opening of a large Sainsbury's supermarket. Dressed up as zombies the protesters were making the point that they should keep local shops in the area and not have the high street ruined by large chains. The action by Stokey Local says: "In Stoke Newington, even the dead are rising up to say 'no' to a proposed Sainsbury's development." Walking slowly as if in a zombie film the march culminated in passing a Sainsbury's Local supermarket on the High Street. In the middle of June it was announced that a development is being planned for Wilmer Place, just beside Abney Park Cemetery on the corner of Church Street and the High Street – right in the heart of Stoke Newington. The proposed development comprises a large Sainsbury's supermarket and 44 homes and has significant implications for the diversity of the local economy, local employment, transport & traffic, noise and safety and local heritage.

(http://www.hhelpingh.org) Alex Juste was lying on his bed when the earthquake struck: "There was a big shuddering noise, I felt the bed shaking" he says. The walls started opening. I could see right into my neighbours' apartment. I had to see what had happened so I started running. I lost it totally. I was screaming, 'This is the end of the world!' There were people under concrete, saying, 'sir, help me,!' But I couldn't do anything." Alex's experience is typical. No Haitian has been left untouched.
