  • Two different types of Energy-saving light bulbs or compact fluorescent lamps in a row on a shelf - 11 watts is equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent bulb and 14 watts and is equivalent to a 75 watt. These light bulbs are a form of fluorescent lighting, which produces less heat than incandescent (filament) bulbs; therefore more of the electrical energy is converted to light, making them more efficient.

Lit by studio lighting with a universe of stars in the background, Crawford is a respected and versatile stand-up comic and TV personality in his own right working for the BBC, Sky, Channel 4 and ITV. Ironically, warm-ups perform a preliminary act before a TV show is recorded to literally warm an audience into non-spontaneous laughter to help a comedy's atmosphere - albeit with the help of prompt signs like these. The first National Lottery Live show was at 19:00 on Saturday 19 November 1994.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.

  • Dawn light and silhouetted people with the Palaces of Westminster, Britain's parliament building on the far side of Westminster Bridge on the River Thames. Sinister figures can be seen on the steps leading down to the Embankment on the Southbank and on the bridge too. It is early morning on the south bank of the river and warm light shines on the Gothic architecture. The Palace, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is where the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) conduct their business. It is therefore a potent symbol for British Governmental power, influence and a world-famous landmark for tourists. Big Ben is the name of the clock's bell and not the tower itself.

  • Dawn light on the Palaces of Westminster, Britain's parliament building on the far side of Westminster Bridge on the River Thames.

  • An odd job maintenance man bends awkwardly on a pair of stepladders to reach an internal light fitting in the cafeteria area of auditing company Ernst & Young's Norman Foster-designed 385,000 square foot European headquarters at More London, England. Dressed in blue shirt and dark trousers and with keys attached to his belt, the balancing man stretches into the hole left by the light to access wiring. To his right we also see an idyllic scene of wild meadow flowers, a carpet of red flora that goes into the distance though incongrously, the reflection of many cafe lights are seen in the sky of the meadow picture. Ernst & Young employs 114,000 people, in 700 locations across 140 countries around the world.

  • Merry Christmas lights and Chritmas stockings hanging up on shutters outside a shop in central London. Attached to a neighbouring shop is the hanging banner with glowing red lights and a tinsel type of material that makes for a festive and cheerful decoration for the outside of someone's home.

  • Seen from slightly behind, a young woman stands taking shelter from early evening rain in Goodge Street, London England. Holding a lit cigarette in her left hand and with an unused ashtray to her right, she is chatting with friends who are also enjoying a relaxing hour after work. Under the UK Government's recent laws on smoking in public places, the work mates are forced outside the pub to smoke on the street in a special area away from the anti-smoking people indoors. Lit by glowing red lights that also provide warmth on this chilly January night, the friends are comfortable in their own company.
