  • Measuring the moisture content of a log with a Protimeter Moisture Meter to see if it is ready to be chipped. Ideally this needs to be around 30% to be ready for chipping. This wood is stored on an airfield in Suffolk, United Kingdom, for about a year to dry. This area of the UK is rich in woodland and this wood can provide a sustainable source of heat when used in efficient boilers. This is exactly what local schools are doing thanks to the local council which is managing the resource while supplying wood-fuel for heating. The initiative saves the schools energy, reduces CO2 emissions by 1,200 tonnes a year and cuts their fuel bills by up to 25%. Suffolk County Council won an Ashden Award for its approach to susatainability.

  • PlayPump near Pretoria, South Africa. The PlayPump Water System uses the energy of children at play to operate a water pump. It is manufactured by the South African company Roundabout Outdoor. It operates in a similar way to a windmill-driven water pump. The PlayPump water system is a like a playground merry-go-round attached to a water pump. The spinning motion pumps underground water into a 2,500-liter tank raised seven meters above ground. The water in the tank is easily dispensed by a tap valve. According to the manufacturer the pump can raise up to 1400 liters of water per hour from a depth of 40 meters. Excess water is diverted below ground again. The storage tank has a four-sided advertising panel. Two sides are used to advertise products, thereby providing money for maintenance of the pump, and the other two sides are devoted to public health messages. There are more than 1000 PlayPump systems in five countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, providing clean drinking water to more than 1 million people in need.

  • Stick fishermen otherwise known as stilt fisherman fishing in the Indian Ocean on 17 April 2016 in Sri Lanka. Stilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to Sri Lanka, located off the coast of India in the Indian Ocean. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a petta tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. Although the approach looks primitive and ancient, stilt fishing is actually a recent tradition believed to have started during World War II when food shortages and overcrowded fishing spots prompted some men to try fishing on the water. Today, many fishermen rent their stilts to “actors” who pose as fishermen for photographers and tourists.

In November, December and January Saffron Coffee coffee farmers gather all of their family members to hand pick only the red-ripe cherries. It will take several passes over these few months to harvest all of them. These farmers were once producers of opium, but who have been impoverished by lack of a replacement crop in the wake of opium’s prohibition by the Lao government. Saffron Coffee’s goal in helping these farmers grow coffee is to give them a viable and sustainable cash crop, developing their economy, and thus giving them the ability to buy medicines and send their children to school.

  • 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations in Sri Lanka's Hill Country district of Nuwara Eliya, women tea pickers bend over trees to harvest Ceylon tea leaves that are taken to the white building on the left for processing. A carpet of velvety green tea bushes stretch into the far distance. This is the heart of the island's tea industry but was a pleasure retreat of the European planters due to its temperate English climate that produces the finest leaves for the country's economy. Teas from this highest region are described as the champagne of Ceylon teas. The leaf is gathered all year round but the finest teas are made from that plucked in January and February. The best teas of the area give a rich, golden, excellent quality liquor that is smooth, bright, and delicately perfumed.
