  • Three large family members eat a picnic in a south London park. Sitting to watch an event in the main arena of the Lambeth Couty Show, the large people continue to eat while seated on a blanket on the park grass. Obesity rates in the UK are the highest in Europe and have increased dramatically over the past few years to such an extent that in excess of 20% of the population are now obese and the costs to the UK economy exceed £3 billion per year. The high prevalence of obesity in adults within England is alarming, with national averages of over 40% of males overweight and more than 20% obese in the 16-75 year age range, while in women the averages are lower for the overweight classification but higher for obesity.

  • Portrait of Ian Studdart, a member of the Serpentine Swimming Club, Hyde Park, London, UK. The Serpentine Lake is situated in Hyde Park, London’s largest central open space. The Serpentine Swimming Club was formed in 1864 ‘to promote the healthful habit of bathing in open water throughout the year’. Its headquarters were beneath an old elm tree on the south side of the lake, a wooden bench for clothing being the only facility. At this time London was undergoing rapid expansion and Hyde Park was now in the centre of a densely populated built up area and provided a place of relaxation to its urbanised masses. Now, the club has its own (somewhat spartan) changing facilities and members are permitted by the Royal Parks to swim in the lake any morning before 09:30. They race every Saturday morning throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

A crowd of 100,000 stood in the London rain to watch Pavarotti perform 20 arias by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and Wagner. VIPs the Princess of Wales, Prime Minister John Major and Michael Caine got soaked in heavy rain along with everyone else sitting on the grass cowering beneath tarpaulins. We see the rotund Operatic maestro in full flow, belting out an aria while dressed in formal tails and wastecoat and holding his customary scarf that he uses to dab the sweat from his brow. Pavarotti helped bring an otherwise high-brow artform to the ordinary Man after the BBC used his rendition of Nessun Dorma to theme their World Cup TV coverage. This lead the way to Opera reaching the Common Man in Britain.

Holding three darts with a Union Jack flags on the 'flights', her glass covers her face but we see her rings and bracelet and her ample belly after a life of beer and cigarettes in pubs like this. A great deal of alcohol (mostly lager, but also Coke) is consumed during darts tournaments although smoking in public places has now been banned in the UK, including pubs and bars. This audience seemed to consist largely of very large lesbian women from working families which seems to suggest that the pub (and alcohol) is still the place where women are attracted to the game of darts.
