  • A wide landscape of damp hillsides and moorland as a lone cyclist struggles uphill near a road landslide at the foot of Mam Tor in the in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park. The bikers have struggled up this incline near the Blue John Cavern, a well-known location where visitors can descend into the cave system, one of many in this limestone and gritstone region of central England. The white lines of the highway have split as the tarmac drops away downhill. It's surface has been undermined as if seismic activity has occurred, an earthquake destroying this route high up in the mountains. But this is area is actually stable geologically and the slippage is probably caused by bad foundations and by recent heavy rain.

  • American tourists admire one of their number riding who has hired a rickshaw in Hong Kong on what is called The Peak. A US tourist sits on the cart that is going to be pulled by its runner. Fellow travellers are taking pictures and smiling at their friend taken away from their group. The word rickshaw came from Asia where they were mainly used as means of transportation for the social elite. In recent times the use of rickshaws has been discouraged or outlawed in many countries due to concern for the welfare of rickshaw workers. Runner-pulled rickshaws have mainly been replaced by cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws. The term "rickshaw" is today commonly used for those vehicles as well. The word "rickshaw" originates from the Japanese word jinrikisha = human riki = power or force, sha = vehicle which literally means "human-powered vehicle".

  • On both sides of the railway track, thousands of commuters desperate to get home after a long day at work in central London, line the platforms to we see from an aerial perspective. But the rail workers’ union has called for industrial action and there are no trains yet for these passengers to board for north or southbound services. Sensibly away from the edges, people are standing up to six-deep in anticipation of a ride home as the exodus to the suburbs hits its peak time. 37 per cent of workers in the capital used rail or underground travel as their main form of transport to work, according to regional and local statistics compiled by the Office for National Statistics.

  • A rural red Victorian post box mounted on a dry stone wall in the Vale of Edale, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire. The distinctive letter VR denote the box’s age, meaning Victoria Regina as opposed to GR for King George or currently ER, for Queen Elizabeth. We also see daily postal collection times on the label. Edale is a valley in North Derbyshire, situated about 15 miles west of Sheffield, a loose collection of scattered farmsteads or 'booths' as they are known which grew up around the original shelters or 'boothies' used by shepherds when tending their sheep on the hillsides. There are 5 main ones in Edale valley, Nether Booth, Ollerbooth, Upper Booth, Barber booth and Grindsbrook Booth of which the village called Edale is part.

  • As early morning mist makes its way across moors and mountain grasses, we see a dead ewe that lies decomposing at a collapsed dry stone wall on Nether Moor, Derbyshire. The sheep has been left behind the rest of the farmer's flock and as it decomposes, its eyes have already been pecked out and its white front incisor teeth gaping, as if grinning in death. This is a loss of revenue of vital income at a time of economic hardship for those in this tough industry. In the background we see the moors rising to it summit in the area called Edale, a valley in North Derbyshire, 15 miles west of Sheffield, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Edale valley is a loose collection of scattered farmsteads or 'booths' as they are known which grew up around the original shelters or 'boothies' used by shepherds when tending their sheep on the hillsides.

  • Schloss (Castle) Vaduz perches high on the slopes above Vaduz, the capital of the tiny landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein. Prince Hans-Adam II is the current resident of the Schloss. The mountain peaks in the background have snow on their jagged edges but the castle itself is free of snow and rests on the slope on a cold but fresh day. Sunlight shines on the side of the old castle walls making this a fairy tale scene of another era of history. The Liechtenstein dynasty dates a royal lineage going back to 1140 under various lines of the Hapsburgs dynasty. Liechtenstein is bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in secrecy.

  • Looking downwards from a high vantage point on a hillside, we see one mountain-biker leading a second cyclist as they traverse across a sunlit mountainside near the hamlet of Masecha in the parish of Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. The late afternoon sun is low across the valley and there is a haze that partly obscures and refracts light over the distant landscape. There is snow on the distant mountain peaks but the countryside has the brown look of a snowless winter. Far off villages and hamlets hug the hillsides and golden light floods the scene.
