  • A trader from the LIFFE futures exchange takes a break in the street during a weekday lunchtime. Alongside him on another bench is a homeless man in the City of London in a scene of wealth with prosperity versus the fate of poverty and loss. Wearing the orange jacket of this once thriving financial instutution, we see a scene of wealth and prosperity, from an era of growth during the industrial revolution to the arrogance and self-indulgence during the government of John Major - a political inheritance from Margaret Thatcher. The LIFFE exchange was synonymous with Thatcherite capitalist money-making ethos in the City of London of the 80s and early 90s before the takeover by Euronext in January 2002. It is currently known as Euronext.liffe. Euronext subsequently merged with New York Stock Exchange in April 2007.

  • A wealthy man's hand hangs outside his shiny black limousine, holding a cigarette. While stationary in traffic in the capital's West End, the unseen man hangs his arm outside of the very expensive vehicle, polished and shiny in winter sunshine. We see a scene of prosperity and arrogance at a time of an improving economy after years of recession and economic downturn. Here is a person of means and privilege, sat at the back of his Bentley, driven by a chauffeur.

  • In the shadow of 1 Canada Square, the iconic Canary Wharf tower in London's Docklands stands as an icon for Thatcherite Britain when the good times, prosperity and economic upturns seemed unshakeable. Four work colleagues stand under a hot lunchtime sun during a summer heatwave. In their shirtsleeves the men each hold pints of refreshing lager, all having removed their dark jackets to enjoy the company of a flirtatious female who appears to be flirting with an older male companion. The sky is blue and the five are care-free to any future economic uncertainty.

  • In the Villa of the Vettii in Pompeii we see a fresco in the lararium where a shrine to Roman guardian spirits of the household was situated. Family members performed daily rituals here to guarantee their protection by these domestic spirits. The first two characters are the deeply venerated 'lares' (presumed sons of Mercury and Lara) depicted as two young men in dancing postures, holding drinking horns that guaranteed prosperity. In the centre is the 'genius'. She is another guardian and fertility spirit ensuring the family line (gens) would continue and she wears the 'toga praetexta', bordered in purple, the garment of high-ranking Roman magistrates. Painted before the catastrophic eruption of Versuvius in AD79, these frescoes have been uncovered from metre-layers of volcanic ash and pumice but are now fading from moisture and cracked plaster.

  • A Ford Anglia is parked in an empty road and homegrown beds of dahlias grow in the front garden of a council house in the early 1960s. Looking through the clean window we see net curtains (drapes) and in the foreground are the flowers showing a prospering post-war era. The car is the only one parked in the road at a time when car ownership was still to become popular among the working and middle-classes is estates like this. The colours are brilliantly reproduced and recorded by Kodachrome film by an amateur photographer in 1963. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • Homegrown beds of dahlias grow in the front garden of a council house in the early 1960s. The flowers are fine specimens of this species. Prospering, tall and healthy in summer sunshine in this front garden in Southend-in-Sea in Essex, England, their reds are brilliantly reproduced and recorded by Kodachrome film by an amateur photographer in 1963. Net curtains (drapes) can be seen in the windows and the green grass is clipped and mown to reflect the obsessive nature of the resident and plant grower. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • There is golden light across this narrow stretch of river, yellow flowers are on the bank and in late golden sunlight, two boys paddle upstream in their Indian canoe on the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, England. Lazily they plunge their paddles into the calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, it is an idyllic scene of innocent childhood on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English summer afternoon. The boys don't appear to be wearing life vests nor safety equipment but propel their craft forwards against the current with confidence.

  • A house-proud housewife trims her lawn with a pair of scissors in new housing on a terraced Liverpool street. Stooping down to ground level, the lady snips and preens individual blades of grass on an almost perfectly manicured lawn. Her home is new, surrounded by the early 20th century and Victorian terraced housing that populates this part of north-western Britain. There are few cars and two other people cross the road without fear of approaching vehicles – the economy here is largely depressed. And yet, the female gardener has taken the trouble to mow her garden and then trim her esteemed plot. She wears an orange suit too, a splash of colour in an otherwise drab street.

It is late one evening in central London, in a suburb known as Herne Hill, SE24 in the borough of Lambeth. We see across the metropolis from quiet and expensive period homes, whose owners would typically be white middle-class, across to the blocks of flats (apartments) in the Loughborough Estate, a far rougher location for street gangs and high crime rates. Owners' cars are parked under streetlights and ash trees and lights shine out from living rooms and bedrooms.
