  • Front yard of Trump supporter with the sign, Proud To Be A Deplorable on 28th February 2020 in Ville Platte, Louisiana, United States. The sign is a reference to Hillary Clinton calling some Trump supporters a basket of deplorables during the 2016 election campaign. The expression backfired and is now used as a Republican rallying cry.

  • A portrait of a local butcher in the Essex seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea. Proud of his produce of fresh joints and carcasses of fresh meat, his business shows a successful and protitable financial concern in this Essex seaside town, largely inhabited by the older generation. We see in the background, hanging pork on hooks and beef joints in the display cabinet with a model of a butcher with his chopping block. A butcher is an ancient trade, whose duties may date back to the domestication of livestock, butchers formed guilds in England as far back as 1272. Today, many jurisdictions offer trade certifications for butchers. Some areas expect a three-year apprenticeship followed by the option of becoming a master butcher.

  • Dressed in typical overalls for the area, traditional Alpine farmer Peter Eberle stands looking up at the viewer for a portrait in the courtyard of his dairy farm in Balzers, Liechtenstein. Mr Eberle wears a woolen hat and blue workman's overalls. He looks a proud but tired and weathered gentleman in his latter years and appears to be an experienced Alpine farmer and we can see a heap of manure over his shoulder and an old fashioned scythe for mowing long grass, leaning against a barn wall. Liechtenstein is a landlocked Principality bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in complete secrecy. Its agricultural output is mainly wheat, barley, corn, potatoes, livestock and dairy products though technology companies have been eroding the traditional ways of life such as Peter's for decades.

  • A house-proud housewife trims her lawn with a pair of scissors in new housing on a terraced Liverpool street. Stooping down to ground level, the lady snips and preens individual blades of grass on an almost perfectly manicured lawn. Her home is new, surrounded by the early 20th century and Victorian terraced housing that populates this part of north-western Britain. There are few cars and two other people cross the road without fear of approaching vehicles – the economy here is largely depressed. And yet, the female gardener has taken the trouble to mow her garden and then trim her esteemed plot. She wears an orange suit too, a splash of colour in an otherwise drab street.

  • Homegrown beds of dahlias grow in the front garden of a council house in the early 1960s. The flowers are fine specimens of this species. Prospering, tall and healthy in summer sunshine in this front garden in Southend-in-Sea in Essex, England, their reds are brilliantly reproduced and recorded by Kodachrome film by an amateur photographer in 1963. Net curtains (drapes) can be seen in the windows and the green grass is clipped and mown to reflect the obsessive nature of the resident and plant grower. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

Along with neighbours and family, the lad shouts out while being tickled as his neighbourhood celebrates the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • Members of the British Royal Marines band march under a giant backdrop of Lord Horatio Nelson's flagship HMS Victory during the Royal Tournament. Ranks of the musical soldiers appear from between large doors that are already closing behind their last rows. Above them is the huge mural depicting the famous sea battles at which Nelson and his fleet of warship navy were victorious such as Gibraltar; Quiberon; Saintes and Cape St. Vincent. The Royal Tournament was the World's largest military tattoo and pageant, held by the British Armed Forces annually between 1880 and 1999. The venue was originally the Royal Agricultural Hall and latterly the Earls Court Exhibition Centre. In its later years it also acted as a fundraising event for leading forces charities, such as The Royal British Legion.

  • An athletic man poses against a wall on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida. This fine specimen of a man wears roller-blades and trousers tucked into his skates with a yellow t-shirt with the word Frequency across his pectoral muscles. His shdow appears across the wall and because of the angle, his shape has been greatly exaggerated, his body becoming a much wider, stockier proportion than the reality. He stands with an arm resting high on the wall and the other on his hip, almost in a feminine manner. He is nonetheless the epitome of maleness, of virility with the healthy physique that women adore and other men are jealous of! The sdidewalk pavement arcs around a corner and the wall with its long shadow is a strong diagonal line across the picture, disappearing to the far right.

  • A middle-aged man, possibly in his late-fifties, holds the lead of his pet dog on a park bench in London England. Afternoon sun filters through nearby trees and the man is wearing a simple, plain white shirt. He sits crossed-legs on this warm afternoon gazing to a point in the distance looking lonely and hopeful of meeting someone else, or maybe of events in a long life. His dog is the man's best friend and companion and he guards him with a strong hand as a master should.

  • A portrait of three brothers of the same family have their picture taken outside their parents' home in Westcliff, England. The eldest is a teenager of approximately 17 and is holding his youngest brother who is still only 12 months-old. The third boy is biting his lip while looking to the viewer, more anxiously than the other two. He is possibly 14 but both the elder lads wear identically-designed jumpers that cut across the throat to allow their clean white shirts and ties to remain visible. Apart from the young child, the elders share the same dark hair colour but genetically, they share one chromosome that has given them heavy eyebrows, a family trait. This was taken on Kodachrome film stock in the spring of 1961 so the look and feel of the image is dated with wonderfully muted colours that this Kodak film offered to consumers in the early 60s.

  • With coils of barded security wire beneath, a sad-looking English flag on a pole overlooks an industrial yard in south London. This might be a metaphor for the state of the nation today, a dystopian society of pessimism and oppression as if from Orwellian fiction. It may also suggest a country during revolution or quanrantine, closed behind the security fence.

  • Four members of the Royal Gurkha Rifles are on tactical manoeuvres on heathland above Farnborough airfield, England. These Nepali-born boys belong to an elite Regiment of the British army. Every year 60,000 boys attend recruiting sessions in villages and towns in the Himalayan Kingdom but only 150 are selected each year to serve on active duty across the world. They fly to the UK for basic soldier training where they learn the skills required for infantry, transport, communications or clerical duties. Their reputation as a fierce but intensely loyal fighting force and many Victoria Crosses were won for bravery during World War 2. Here they are seen cradling modern SA-80 rifles while dressed in camouflaged helmets with oak leaves. The nearest to the camera points his weapon past the viewer with a yellow blank cover attached.

  • A portrait of a young man with a face painted with the English flag and the letters THFC Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, a north London club, a effort he has made during an outdoor party celebrating the 50th anniversary of VE Victory in Europe Day on 6th May 1995, in London, England.
