  • A husband and wife make their way along a pavement towards the entrance of the Ascot racecourse where the annual Ladies' Day event is held as part of the English social season calendar. Leading the way and carrying two walking sticks and in a polythene bag, his best jacket for the dress-code is important if one is allowed access to the private enclosures. He wears a top hat and waste coat as he hobbles along with wife in tow. She is behind him rummaging through her handbag perhaps looking for tickets or cash. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • In the middle of a field serving as a grass car park, three couples celebrate the Ladies' Day event at Royal Ascot. Holding their glasses to toast a grand day out at this annual sporting event in the social calendar, the gentlemen are dressed in formal top hats and tails, the ladies in wide hats and summer dresses. Grinning and looking smug in their upp-class social status, they are seated eccentrically and comically around a plastic table with a tablecloth, two Candelabras and their picnic lunch plates full of fine food.

  • As a young office worker sleeps incongruously on a marble pavement, a street sweeper nearby brushes away litter with a small dustpan. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • Rosanna, face painting during the Somers Town Festival on 09th July 2016 in London, United Kingdom. Rosanna is from Sardinia, Italy, and works for New Horizon, a social enterprise for young homless people based in Somers Town. Somers Town, a district in north west London, is a large housing estate nestled between Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross Library. Predominantly filled with social housing for the past 200 years, much of the area’s housing was built in the twentieth century by the local authority.

  • Affordable social housing wall exterior in Brandon Street, London borough of Southwark. Hexagonal ceramic tiles in 37 different colours for a wall of this social housing property, part of the area's 15-year £1.5billion regeneration. The £2.45million Brandon Street building, which will be managed by London & Quadrant Housing Association, is one of two recently completed in the area by Shoreditch-based Metaphorm Architects. 18 two- and three-bedroom flats are for social rent behind a glittering, undulating ceramic-tiled facade that sweeps along Brandon Street.

  • Five elderly women on-lookers are lined against a wall outside the famous Ascot race course on Ladies' Day, the annual event on the English sporting and social calendar in June. Each are standing in order of size, from tallest (who holds a Tesco supermarket bag) to smallest and watch as two posh couples arrive for the day's racing dressed in showy dresses for the ladies and the men in formal top hat and tails. The posh lady in the front is in yellow and holds on to her straw hat on this windy summer day. Each wears their red Ascot badges allowing them entry to this exclusive royal event attended by the Royal Family and the hoi polloi of English society. We see the two sides of the class system but it is a humerous scene. There is good nature between the two groups with smiles exchanged with one couple but discomfort from those behind.

  • The message in graffiti lettering "Don't come here they attack you" has been written on a wall outside a house in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Merseyside England. Flat 1A has a bright red-painted door and red bricks in an otherwise poverty-stricken district of this poor inner-city where crime and social deprivation has become the normal way of life for Scouses (someone from Liverpool). We see the red theme carried throughout this image of threat and ill-discipline where survival is clearly hard. These 'back to back' terraced houses have largely been demolished during Liverpool's regeneration during the 60s and 70s though some remain, accommodating unfortunate families on low-income.

  • A filthy alleyway in Toxteth, Liverpool amid socially-deprived streets and terraced housing. Graffiti of girls' names has been painted on to the brick wall of a tenement building but is now peeling off. Weeds have grown around the cobbled pavement and the windows are boarded up in a landscape of urban dereliction and social depravity.

  • As a sleeping homeless man lies curled up in his sleeping bag on a central London pavement, two window cleaners have carefully placed their ladders at his feet to clean a Boots the chemist sign. Each wearing identical blue working overalls and each wiping the frontage with their left hands, the men are symbolic of the working man versus that of a homeless person without a job, prospects or perhaps a future. The wide gap between hopelessness and the pride of one's achievement is shown here on the sidewalk of modern-day Britain. London is home to some 50,000 homeless people whose place of rest can often be recesses and shop doorways where they seek sanctuary from the cold and street violence. On the opposite end of the wealth and social divides are those who seek work with a positive outlook on life.

  • Well-dressed and well-appointed English people pass-by on the River Thames during the Henley Royal Regatta boat races, England. In the foreground is a smart and highly-polished launch filled with a party of friends who motor past while to their port (left) a rowing boat with three men in blazers pass them going downstream. On the riverbank a garden marquee hosts another social gathering. In 1829 a boat race challenge was held between teams representing the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The venue chosen was a straight stretch of the Thames at the small town of Henley-on-Thames. Now held July and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season for the hoi polloi

  • As suited commuters begin their homeward journeys across London Bridge, towards the station that will transport them home to families and security, a homeless man without the warmth of relatives nor a roof over his head, rants and shouts at the respectable people with jobs and incomes. He has been drinking alcohol and sits leaning against the bridge's wall, pointing and threatening but all walk on past, afraid and embarrassed. We see the social divisions of English society, of prospects and wealth versus hopelessness and poverty as those who are marginalised and perhaps suffering from mental health problems are ignored by the successful capitalist.

  • A very smart young man of afro-Caribbean descent wears a quintessentially English summer straw hat, cravat and pinstriped blazer during a hot afternoon at the Henley Royal Regatta boat races, England. He stands with the hat shading his dark-skinned face from a sun, while chatting to unseen friends. He appears to be a student at an English university – Oxford or Cambridge – and is here to take in the social scene at this famous boating event on the River Thames. In 1829 a boat race challenge was held between teams representing the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The venue chosen was a straight stretch of the Thames at the small town of Henley-on-Thames. Now held July and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season for the hoi polloi.

  • A middle-aged woman walks along a gloomy street in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

This innovative project is the first in the UK to power the railway with electricity generated from solar power and, if successful, could see many Network Rail sites across the country adapting this sustainable energy approach. Riding Sunbeams is a social enterprise, run by 10:10 Climate Action. Built with Community Energy South and partnered with Network Rail and The Department for Transport and by InnovateUK. Aldershot, Hampshire, United Kingdom. Riding Sunbeams is a world leading project to connect solar panels directly into electrified rail routes to power the trains. Direct supply of solar power to rail traction systems has never been done. But it has huge potential - from metros, trams and railways in the UK and around the world.
