  • From a high vantage point looking across the atrium of British architect Sir Richard Rogers' Lloyds building, we see the zig-zag-shape stripes of escalators, beyond which we see the desks of insurance underwriters at the Lloyd's building, home of the insurance institution Lloyd's of London which is located in Lime Street, in the heart of the City of London. Lloyd's is a British insurance market. It serves as a meeting place where multiple financial backers or "members", whether individuals (traditionally known as "Names") or corporations, come together to pool and spread risk. Unlike most of its competitors in the reinsurance market and is neither a company nor a corporation. • The massive IRA bomb in Bishopsgate Street in the heart of the City of London destroyed a substantial number of businesses and disrupted a major part of London's financial hub. In the days after the attack on 24th April 1993, we see the pictorial evacuation of smiling faces in a portrait of Pret a Manger staff, the sandwich and lunch chain (from the French 'Ready to Eat'). The image was hung above the premises and construction workers wearing hard hats transport the picture, like hundreds of other nearby businesses whose workers carried away company property, for temporary safe storage. This store was also badly damaged and had to be transferred to another location. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. • Seen from an office block high vantage point, thousands of commuters pour northwards over London Bridge against the direction of queueing buses and cars. It is a scene about the transient business community and mass transport. The working population arrives early for work over the bridge in the City of London's historic financial district. We see the sunlit faces of those walking towards the viewer which echo the red tail lights of the stationary vehicles. So gridlocked is the traffic on the southbound carriageway, there is a lone cyclist stuck and squeezed between the curb and a double-decker bus. On the other side of the road, the street is almost empty of motors adding to the drama and chaos. • An after-work Christmas party at Coates Wine Bar on London Wall (street) gathers energy after nine o'clock pm at a table near the bar. A group of three girls sing along to a karaoke machine while one of the three sticks out her tongue towards her friend. They are each drinking glasses of white wine and two packets of Marlboro and one of Silk Cut cigarettes lies on the table surrounded by their handbags and other possessions including a camera. There are other people in the background including two men at the bar and a man on his own edging past with a cigarette in his right hand. It is a gloomy place to party with little artificial light to colour (color) the scene. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. • Looking down from a high vantage point, we se boy pupils seated as they gather in front of the Headmaster during morning assembly at the City of London School for boys in central London. Individual faces in neat rows stretch into the distance as we look past the Headmaster who is addressing, facing his students. Some seem serious, a few are looking bored while one boy can be seen coughing into his hand and another looking away with a smirk. We can see a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, skin colours and hairstyles. The City of London School (CLS) is a boys' public school on the banks of the River Thames. It traces its origins to a bequest of land by John Carpenter, town clerk of London in 1442. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. • At the base of the Monument which commemorates the Great Fire of London, a courier driver from the United States Postal Service (UPS), stands with his head in his hands as if in reaction to the conflagration behind. Above him is a giant mural, whose huge figures depict the panic and evacuation during the disaster that struck London between 2nd of September and Wednesday, 5th September 1666. The modern man in company uniform is wearing the same brown colours as that of King Charles II and his courtier who are also reacting to the news of the city's burning timber buildings. 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, and most of the buildings of the City authorities were lost in the high fanned winds. It is estimated that it destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's 80,000 inhabitants. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. • We see three friends close-up enjoying a festive party at Hamiltons pub in the City of London only a week before Christmas. It is a busy evening in the public house which is located near Liverpool Street mainline Station and they are in a humerous spirit just having fired off party streamers that have stuck to their clothes and faces. Two are wearing red and white santa claus hats but are stil in their work clothes. One is about to drink some of his pint of beer from a long, straight glass. The three look comical because of the streamers draped over their bodies and they are laughing and giggling at a joke that one has cracked. • Taking a break from the London Marathon, a young runner dressed as Superman emerges from a Portaloo after a quick toilet stop. Located at the London Fire Brigade's station on Lower Thames Street in City of London in the capital's historic financial district, their empty fire hose snakes across the ground. The young man wears trainers, a red skirt, a Super-hero top with the Superman emblem on his chest and he walks out of the portable convenience adjusting a green frizzy wig. Disgarded mineral water bottles have been thrown on the ground by other passing athletes but this is a theatrical pun, that Superman changes personality, name and powers when leaving a telephone box. Apart from the colour (color) of the toilet, the runner and the hose, the background is drab and overcast. • Striding across the picture in different directions, two office workers: A lady in a red coat whose head and identity is lost in shadow, and a man wearing a dark suit whose stride is purposeful and confident. A third person, another man, leans against a wall looking thoughtfully into the distance. There is more shadow than highlight in this scene taken at Broadgate, a private estate of financial institutions and global businesses in the heart of the City of London. There are no spring leaves on the trees whose shadows are falling on an opposite wall. The headless lady looks sinister minus her face and there is tension in this image of linear and diagonal space. • We are looking down from above to office and business workers who are lying down and relaxing in the grass in their lunch break at Finsbury Circus, a circular green park space in the heart of London's financial district, the City of London. Surrounding them is an art instillation of steel sheep that are incongruously grazing among the assorted people, much like they once did when London was a home to livestock en-route to market and other animals used for transport. It is a warm afternoon and in the foreground, a man wearing a dark suit has taken off his polished shoes and is lying his head on his jacket in the warm afternoon, loosening his tight tie and stretching his neck. Elsewhere, a lady is sitting eating a packed lunch with the Sun newspaper and a man a little further behind is in jeans and plimsoll shoes. • A male passenger is asleep with his mouth open, leaning his head on a bus window as it passes the background pillars of the Bank of England in the financial district City of London. On the exterior of the bus are the words: "We've got to get this city to work," an advertising slogan used by London Transport to seduce commuters from their cars and back on to public transport which is one of the most expensive world capitals on which to travel by bus, train or underground. This style of bus is a traditional design called a 'Routemaster' which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes such as these destination: Victoria, Bond Street, Oxford Street, Holborn and Bank (the Bank of England). From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. • Seen through the window of Coates Wine Bar which contains small square patterns of frosted glass, the arched structure of Broadgate offices in the City of London, appears beyond. Trees whose leaves are turning into autumnal colour can also be seen blending into the landscape. Broadgate is a vast estate of office buildings developed in the Thatcher years, sitting astride the redeveloped Liverpool Street mainline station. We see the classic architectural feature that gives strength to large buildings - the load-bearing arch.

  • Looking upwards towards the back of a number 8 red London bus which passes the pillars of the famous Bank of England building at Cornhill in the City Of London, the financial district, otherwise known as the Square Mile. We see the Bank rising as an imposing classical structure. Its columns are converging because of wide-angle lens-distortion, giving us the image of strength, stability and influence in UK economics. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes. Its distinctive rounded rear bodywork is easily recognisable as that classic British icon.

With both their hands up to shield the sun from their faces, the men stand aghast at the amount of devastation to their working landscape. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. repair costs reached approx £350 million.
