  • In the shelter of a large red and yellow-striped marquee tent, a middle-aged husband and wife relax in deck chairs on Brighton's East Pier, England. The wife appears to be asleep and has taken the prrecution against splinters from the pier's planks by spreading a tiny towell to rest her feet upon. She has dyed hair and large sun glasses and her bony legs are tanned and veined from much exposure to the sun. The husband is also fully-clothed with a loud checked jacket, black shoes and socks and he sits crossed-legged with a peaked cap and dark glasses with his hands across his belly. They are in a peaceful spot on this pier, a Victorian seaside structure built in 1899 for those taking the air to walk out onto the sea without getting their feet wet.

  • A pet poodle looks towards us in the same way that an RSPCA charity box model spaniel does outside a seaside shop tourist. The shop is selling seaside resort holiday tourist trinkets – a postcard rack has been carefully placed in the middle of the pavement (sidewalk) as holidaymakers pass-by to browse the cheap mementoes. The owner of the poodle has stopped to choose some cards for those at home and allows his dog a little slack on the lead. The dog cranes its neck towards the viewer, matching the posture and stance of the model charity spaniel whose cast sits, posing in a sorrowful and empathy-making show of need, suffering and want – enough perhaps to encourage people to give to this charity, the RSPCA (the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals).

  • Two sisters sit in identical poses on sea wall benches at Blackpool's Promenade, Lancashire, England. The eccentric pair has adopted the same posture in a way that twins and sisters sharing the same genetic characteristics and habits often do. Seated with bags at their own sandals and with the same styles of floral pattern dresses, the two look like the proverbial ‘peas in a pod.’ Blackpool is a seaside resort in the northwest of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. Blackpool is the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people during the industrial revolution.

  • Visitors to the new Weston-super-Mare Grand Pier carry walking sticks and pause near the end to admire the activities on this popular seaside structure. Three elderly ladies stop to see something elsewhere while two gentlemen hold almost identical sticks despite appearing too young to need them. In the background are other day-trippers and further away in the distance, the eastern part of this north Somerset resort. The Grand Pier is a pier in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England. It is situated on the Bristol Channel approximately 18 miles (29 km) south west of Bristol.

  • Stopping work for a moment to pose for a portrait on the sea wall at Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, a team of the resort's lifeguards show their youth, fitness and bodies beautiful, displaying themselves in the sun of a fine summer day. There is only one female member but some are standing on the wall while others are seated in deck chairs, a ladder seat or on the hot sand near three sexy girls are are sunning themselves near a railing. Wearing bikinis one is not asleep but eyeing-up some of the alpha-male specimens on show wearing only red shorts. Meanwhile, holidaymakers walk past with ice-creams. It is a bright scene and obviously a busy time for these safety experts when tourists forever get themselves into danger in the sea and surf. Currents here make for a hazardous experience for those unable to swim out of trouble.

  • A young couple sit on an early, quiet Blackpool North Pier in Lancashire. With no one else to bother them during a private conversation. It looks a little one-sided, as the man sits nonchalantly with legs splayed, as if disinterested in the romantic whispers from his girlfriend, and the woman, looking much more attentive and in love. We see the calm waters of the Irish Sea that this morning is at high tide. In the background is Blackpool Tower, an architectural copy of Paris' Eiffel Tower opened to the public on 14 May 1894 and rises to 158m (518 ft 9 inches). This northern seaside resort in the northwest of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. We see the perfectly clear blue sea surrounding the islands and tiny sandbanks of white coral beach sand, all of which are in jeopardy of rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to being overwhelmed. The only sign of life is the tiny island in the bottom right of frame where holiday resort accommodation ring this dot in the ocean. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka.

  • Four water-logged deckchairs have been abandoned on a wet Brighton's East Pier in East Sussex. It is Spring but the rain has driven away holidaymakers from this desolate and depressing spot from England's South coast seaside resort. We see a gloomy, grey sky and empty horizon with neither people, nor water activity but the stripes of the railings are echoed in the reflective wooden planks on this Victorian-era pier and of the fabric on the deckchairs. We wonder who might have sat on these chairs and where they might be now? This landscape might be the antithesis of a holiday poster that repels rather than attracts tourists to this location.

  • A rather obese woman stands in the waves at the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. With hands behind her back and fingers interlocked the lady wears a turquoise bathing costume that just about fits her ample, wide body. Her bottom is large as are her legs that have cellulite on the tops of her thighs. She looks left alone, a solitary person standing with her back to the viewer - or perhaps she is standing guard, keeping watch on children as they play safely in the sea. Water splashes against her lower legs and is frozen still by a fast shutter speed. It is a fine, bright sunny afternoon on this Eastern coast of England, more noted for very changeable weather rather than the heatwave experienced here.

  • A lady protects herself from a mid-day summer summer sun with a brightly coloured parasol brolley. Oblivious to the viewer, she balances her lunch snack on her lap with toes pointing inwards, exposed to the hot solar rays. Meanwhile, she holds on tight to her eager pet poodle dog who is straining on its leash, wanting to go for a walk along the largely unpopulated promenade in this Devon resort, otherwise known as the English Riviera. But splashes of white paint (from the painted beach huts) have been left on the pavement. It is a horrible place to sit in the sun and her partner has left her alone to sit on her sun lounger, leaving the second chair vacant.

  • A young boy peers over a clump of vegetation to spy on four beautiful women who are all lying face-down in a sandy dune near the seaside resort of `Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The girls are oblivious to the attention he is giving them and he cheekily stands, undiscovered, with hands on hips. The four females are in bathing costumes and one is topless with their possessions strewn about the sand. It is a hot afternoon in the sand dunes and the girls are in an otherwise secluded, windless spot. They remain unaware they are being watched by a pre-pubescent voyeur.

  • Two men enjoy their own versions of Blackpool North Pier, Lancashire, England. On the right, the first man is lying down on a bench with his trousers gathered around his ankles, his red bathing costume or underpants are baggy and he is looking across to something of interest while scratching his bald head. The second man on the right is not wearing a shirt and his stomach is spilling over his trousers. He has a bunch of keys attached to his belt and is pointing a video camera (camcorder) towards the shore. It is a comical scene and typical of Blackpool beach life. This northern sea side resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd.

  • An unrecognisable bather wearing a stripy costume bends over awkwardly to adjust his towel on the promenade pavement (sidewalk) at Minehead, Devon. The man's reddened posterior is pointed towards the viewer and his dachshund (sausage) pet dog stands still looking away to the right, towards unseen interest. A family of four stroll along the sandy beach during low tide. It is a hot afternoon but we only see a quiet scene at this busy resort.

  • Looking downwards from a high vantage point on a hillside, we see one mountain-biker leading a second cyclist as they traverse across a sunlit mountainside near the hamlet of Masecha in the parish of Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. The late afternoon sun is low across the valley and there is a haze that partly obscures and refracts light over the distant landscape. There is snow on the distant mountain peaks but the countryside has the brown look of a snowless winter. Far off villages and hamlets hug the hillsides and golden light floods the scene. The tiny landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein is bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in secrecy.

  • Using a tabloid newspaper, a father seeks shelter from sunshine while sitting in a council deck chair. On the front page of the paper is a headline saying "Butchered' showing a picture of an unfortunate young 3 year-old boy murdered by a maniac axeman. Close-by is the man's own son who is digging a hole furiously in the sand. He looks uncannily like a slightly older version of the murdered boy. This coincidence is heightened because of the body-language of the digging lad, seemingly about to chop an unseen object with his red spade. Both man and boy are on holiday at the northern English seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and they are otherwise having a great time on South Beach, near the Grand Hotel building, high up on the cliff.

  • An elderly man sunbathes on a summer beach in the seaside resort of Paignton, England. The gentleman looks out across the stretch of sandy coast at low-tide and a square pool made by flooding high-tide sea water provides a natural place to swim when the sea is far out. The male in the foreground is seen in close-up and we see the expanse of his back covered in freckles. After many sunny hours beneath solar rays he is tanned but not burned. Nevertheless, he is at risk of the pigment in those freckles turning into melanomas, the cause of skin cancer. More than 10,000 people a year are developing the deadliest form of skin cancer as a result of package holidays and excessive use of sunbeds. Cases of malignant melanoma rose by 650 (6.5 per cent) in a single year as a result of binge-tanning at home and abroad, according to Cancer Research UK.
