  • Ageing 80s technology of the Thames Barrier on the River Thames near Woolwich in east London. As daylight fades to become a purple hue, we see the waters of the Thames flowing on the tide. Operational in 1982, the Thames Barrier is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world, managed by the UK's Environment Agency. The barrier spans 520 metres across the River Thames near Woolwich, and it protects 125 square kilometres of central London from flooding caused by tidal surges. The barrier has closed over 80 times since the year 2000 with ‘at least 800,000 homes and businesses have protected from tidal surges.

  • The sun rises over the River Thames and City of London, the UK capital's financial heart. The solar power gathers in strength and intensity as it climbs from below the horizon and behind City buildings, its circular disc a flaming yellow which is soon to turn a deeper hue over the capital's orange skies at dawn. The tidal river is calm with only moored barges in the middle, used to secure other boats to their sides. The City wakes before another day of trading in the financial, banking and insurance institutions. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is centre to the skyline.

In winter, the Pralongià meadows are the heart of Alta Badia’s skiing area. Hiking trails lead across the high alpine pastureland between Corvara and San Cassiano (St. Kassian) with hilly upland meadows with vast mountain pastures and many old hay huts, a pretty group of trees at the edges of the meadows, and the beautiful shapes of the surrounding mountains, which include the Gruppo di Sella (Sellastock) Massif, Sassongher, Monte Cavallo (Heiligkreuzkofel), Cunturines and Lagazuoi.

  • An out of focus post with a light bulb attached, shines in the bright daylight with the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Cocoa beach is on Florida's so-called Space Coast, a resort of beaches, clubs, seafood restaurants and motels that came to life during the 1960s due to America's space program. NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center is located approximately 15 miles away. The Atlantic Ocean is flat calm in settled weather and the horizon is clear and well-defined with a ship just visible on the right side. Focus is on the sea rather than the post and the light bulb which look like a surreal addition to the landscape. Cocoa Beach served as a playground for many of the astronauts and NASA space industry workers and contractors during the heyday of the space race. After manned space flights, the town held astronaut parades. Before there was a "Silicon Valley," Cocoa Beach and other surrounding towns were full of the best and brightest technical minds around.

  • A lady sits outside in morning sunshine on the terrace of her B+B guesthouse in the Devon seaside town of Paignton. It is late morning and a lady has emerged from her bead and breakfast. Sunlight is quite high in the sky and the shadows of a vine that is growing across the roof of the building's terrace, is seen on the wall behind the woman. She is seated reading a magazine in a garden chair and is surrounded by colourful flowers in their prime. Well-painted original victorian railings that act as a sort of ballustrade are in front of the female. In the window is a scene of typical seaside Englishness. Serviettes are splayed out on a table along with breakfast or dinner items awaiting guests at the next meal.

  • A lone bather wallows lazily in the calm pool waters at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat (formerly the Bel Air Hotel), Alpes Maritimes, France. Basking on his back, the man lies with arms outstretched, the warm buoyant water making him weightless. he has found inner-peace and there is restful tranquility here, where surface-tension allows the bather to unwind completely in this idyllic place on the French Cote d'Azur riviera. Behind his head unoccupied sun loungers are facing the Mediterranean Sea, its clear horizon empty except for a lone yacht that sails along the ocean coast. The colour of both sea and pool are the same on this overcast day that allows us to experience a more muted tone to the scene, also allowing us to see the contiunation of natural waters, as if they run from one to the other.

  • Fonti del Clitunno in Campello Sul Clitunno, Umbria, Italy. Beautiful river with natural springs appearing as an oasis of tranquility. Now very much a tourist destination, this is where Emporer Caligula came to worship the River God Clitunno and consult the ancient oracles.

  • A young boy creates ripples as he plays with his radio-controlled boat in the River Thames at Dorchester, Oxfordshire. The sun is hidden behind a line of trees and the boy who is backlit stands in the shallow part of the river up to his ankles, wearing his swimming costume. The small boat is only a few feet from the antenna that controls its movement. It is a scene of idyllic tranquility, a childhood of happy summer days. Here the Thames is at its most serene, where visitors enjoy its shallows with the fear of strong currents, tides or large boating activity.

  • It is mid-day on the narrow stretch of river, green lilly pads float on its surface and in unbder a fierce sun overhead, three young men are lazily making their way to the viewer in a rowing boat on the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, England. The young male in the middle is the one rowing and he pulls on one oar to steer around an unseen obstacle in the absolutely calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, we see an idyllic scene of adventure and peace on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English midsummer day. 'Three men in a Boat' published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford.

  • Piled river bed stones on the River Calder in Glen Bauchor, Newtonmore, Scotland. An artist has spent many hours in this tranquil place, sourcing and selecting the right stones to pile up vertically on top of each other. Rock balancing can be a performance art, a spectacle, or devotion, depending upon the interpretation by its audience. Essentially, it involves placing some combination of rock or stone in arrangements that require patience and sensitivity to generate, and which appear to be physically impossible while actually being only highly improbable.

  • There is golden light across this narrow stretch of river, yellow flowers are on the bank and in late golden sunlight, two boys paddle upstream in their Indian canoe on the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, England. Lazily they plunge their paddles into the calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, it is an idyllic scene of innocent childhood on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English summer afternoon. The boys don't appear to be wearing life vests nor safety equipment but propel their craft forwards against the current with confidence.

  • A family punts down the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, Oxfordshire England. Lazily they glide down the calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English summer afternoon. A young man stands on the boat's stern dragging a pole through the rippled water to propel the vessel upstream. There is golden light across the narrow stretch of the river, yellow flowers are on the bank and a faint breeze fills the triangular sail which is reflected in the clear water that flows a length of 215 miles (346 km) from Gloucestershire to London.

  • An early sun rises over the misty surface of the River Thames at Dorchester, Oxfordshire. We see a scene of golden light across the perfectly still waters, a landscape of peace and tranquillity. The mirror-like surface is at Dorchester-on-Thames, just above the Thame's confluence with the River Thames. The River Thames is the second longest river in the United Kingdom and the longest river entirely in England (215 miles or 346 km long). It rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire, and flows into the North Sea at the Thames Estuary. Historically the Thames was only so-named downstream of the village; upstream it is named the Isis, and Ordnance Survey maps continue to label the river as "River Thames or Isis" until Dorchester.
