  • A Trussell Trust foodbank food voucher in Kingston, United Kingdom. These vouchers are issued by care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, Citizen Advice Bureau and police, who have identified people in crisis and require an emergency food supply. This voucher can be taken to the nearest foodbank and will be exchanged for a food box which contains at least three days of non-perishable essential food. There are many reasons why people require foodbank supplies, which include: rising costs of food and fuel combined with static income, high unemployment and changes to benefits. In 2012-13 foodbanks fed 346,992 people nationwide. Of those helped, 126,889 were children.

It helps unemployed people apply for social security benefit (jobs seekers allowance) and assists them to gain employment. Jobcentre’s have experienced a significant increase in demand for their services during the financial recession and government changes to the welfare system. At the same time they have experienced budget cut backs and many centers have had to close.

  • The fishing fleet of Tarbert on Scotland's Mull of Kintyre lies moored at the dock of this pretty coastal village in the Western Isles. Their colourful hulls shine in late afternoon sunshine as they are tied up awaiting another outing at sea to provide for this small fishing community a living and a livelihood for its families. But in the foreground sit a young couple whose prospects are not so positive: they rest on a bench in silhouette, one smoking a cigarette while turned to the friend who stares out to distant rolling hills. It is a scene of hopelessness that reflects modern life for the youth in remote communities where jobs are scarce and their futures far from secure. In an otherwise idyllic Scottish landscape, we guess at the disintegration of society up here - the scourge of economic downturn and future social problems.

As a result of the 1987 a stock market collapse, the UK economy experienced a downturn resulting in public services suffering a reduction, including the closure of the Job Centres of the day. The recession of the early 1990s describes the period of economic downturn affecting much of the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

  • A man sleeps in mid-afternoon sunshine on the steps of Royal Exchange opposite the Bank of England in the City of London, taking a nap in the heart of the capital’s financial district. A red double-decker Routemaster bus has stopped in a queue of traffic opposite with an advert for London buses saying ‘We’ve got to get this city to work’ but with tattoos on his arms and his forehead and wearing heavy army-style boots, he is clearly not on his way to a job and therefore out-of-place in this busy part of London. With arms folded and head resting on an unseasonal coat, the man is asleep and going nowhere.
