  • Crowds wave Union Jack flags and gather in London's Hyde Park to remember the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

It is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Organised settlement of Ascension Island began in 1815, when the British garrisoned it as a precaution after imprisoning Napoleon I on Saint Helena. In January 2016 the UK Government announced that an area around Ascension Island was to become a huge marine reserve, to protect its varied and unique ecosystem, including some of the largest marlin in the world, large populations of green turtle, and the islands own species of frigate bird. With an area of 234,291 square kilometres 90,460 sq mi, slightly more than half of the reserve will be closed to fishing.

It is a bright summer's day and the blue sky has vapour trails left by a previous display pilot's jet engine.
