  • Seventeen officer cadets march in line wearing full dress uniform with their rifles on shoulders past guests and VIPs at their passing out parade in the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The recently-graduated soldiers march in a near-perfect line looking over their right shoulders towards their commanding officers and VIP guests which sometimes includes Her Majesty the Queen. We see every face clearly and notice their different heights and sizes. Sharp focus is centred on the smallest man in the parade. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), commonly known simply as Sandhurst, is the British Army officer initial training centre. Sandhurst is prestigious and has had many famous alumni including Sir Winston Churchill, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Sultan Qaboos of Oman and, more recently, Prince Harry and Prince William. All British Army officers, and many from elsewhere in the world, are trained at Sandhurst. RMA Sandhurst was formed in 1947, from a merger of the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich (which trained officers for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers from 1741 to 1939) and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

  • VIPs in the City of London and from the armed services, watch the Lord Mayor's Show at Mansion House. Decorated officers and their families stand alongside the newly-elected Lord Mayor as the procession passes-by. The new Mayor’s procession consists of a 3-mile, 150-float parade of commercial and military organisations going back to medieval times. This is the oldest and longest civic procession in the world that has survived the Plague and the Blitz, today one of the best-loved pageants. Henry Fitz-Ailwyn was the first Lord Mayor (1189-1212) and ever since, eminent city fathers (and one woman) have taken the role of the sovereign’s representative in the City – London’s ancient, self-governing financial district. The role ensured the King had an ally within the prosperous enclave.

  • The chairs for the next Torbay Carnival Princess and Queen competition winners awaits their newest occupants during the seaside town’s fair in Devon, England. A crown, hat and two bouquets of flowers are for the young girls too and the sash has the words ‘Princess for a Day’ across the material. The theme of the stage is blue, with matching colours on both cushions and the backing curtain (drapes). There is no one in this landscape but we get a sense of the tacky and old-fashioned nature of the carnival and of its princess competition.

  • The Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti performs in London during the free Party in the Park concert to celebrate his 30 years in opera. A crowd of 100,000 stood in the London rain to watch Pavarotti perform 20 arias by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and Wagner. VIPs the Princess of Wales, Prime Minister John Major and Michael Caine got soaked in heavy rain along with everyone else sitting on the grass cowering beneath tarpaulins. We see the rotund Operatic maestro in full flow, belting out an aria while dressed in formal tails and wastecoat and holding his customary scarf that he uses to dab the sweat from his brow. Pavarotti helped bring an otherwise high-brow artform to the ordinary Man after the BBC used his rendition of Nessun Dorma to theme their World Cup TV coverage. This lead the way to Opera reaching the Common Man in Britain.

  • Intert-denominational clergy await the order to enter Westminster Abbey where Pope Benedict XVI is to address VIPs during papal tour of Britain 2010, the first visit by a pontiff since 1982. Taxpayers footed the £10m bill for non-religious elements, which largely angered a nation still reeling from the financial crisis. Pope Benedict XVI is the head of the biggest Christian denomination in the world, some one billion Roman Catholics, or one in six people. In Britain there are about five million Catholics but only a quarter of Catholics regularly attend Sunday Mass and some churches have closed owing to spending cuts.

  • In the weeks before Christmas day in December, the Lord Mayor of London makes a speech in front of invited guests and VIPs, hosting his annual party in the Great Hall at his official town hall - the Guildhall - in the historic financial district of the City of London. Inviting Greater London's borough Mayors, they can each invite worthy children for an afternoon's fancy dress party. The Guildhall has been used as a town hall for several hundred years, and is still the ceremonial centre of the City of London. The term Guildhall refers both to the whole building and to its main room, which is a medieval style great hall similar to those at many Oxbridge colleges. The great hall is believed to be on the site of an earlier Guildhall, and has large mediaeval crypts underneath. During the Roman period it was the site of an amphitheatre, the largest in Britannia.
