  • London, UK. Thursday 9th July 2015. Tube and train strikes caused misery for commuters with the entire London Underground network shut down and many rail services cancelled. The strike was in protest at longer working hours announced due to the tube system being open all night on weekends. Instead of taking public transport, many people decided that it was best to walk, which made normally quiet streets busy with workers walking home.

A foot is about to be placed on the pavement while in the background another man makes his way along the street. They are alongside two video screens showing a loop of models on the catwalk, each also seen walking in profile, the same as the shoppers and workers. The location is 19-20 Bond Street, a street in the West End of London, connecting Piccadilly in the south to Oxford Street in the north. • Dragging a baby's buggy as family members go out for a walk on open snowbound countryside in North Somerset. It is Boxing Day, the day after Christmas and the traditional family walk is more of an event this year with much of Britain covered in heavy snows during a particularly nasty period of climactic freezing conditions. Rather than push, a father pulls his child's buggy through the snow accompanied by another man and a younger boy all of whose legs are in the same walking positions. The female members of the group are out of this picture and in the way that walks often play out, females and males speak with their own gender. The landscape is that of a rural hill with a grey sky filled with more snow cloud and bare wintry trees are behind, their branches bare.

  • Pedestrians walk in spring sunshine over the newly re-opened Millennium Bridge over London's River Thames, England. The £18.2m bridge, central London's first new river crossing (from tate Modern to St Paul's Cathedral) for more than a century, was opened on 10 June 2000 but was shut three days later because of what engineers called the "synchronised footfall" - the swaying effect of hundreds of people stepping in unison. 91 dampers similar to shock absorbers were fitted allowing its re-opening in early 2002. We see here hundreds of visitors to the Bankside walking north and south across this convenient piece of engineering. Coincidentally, they walk on the same right side as drivers in the UK. Two businessmen walk closest to the viewer but elsewhere people look like tourists and pleasure-seekers.

  • High in the Nepali Himalayan foothills, travellers may be greeted by the welcoming relief of a group of mountain inns and hotels offering lodging to weary legs after many hours walking uphill in this gruelling landscape. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • An Evening Standard newspaper headline announces the fury of London commuters' at a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. This is Victoria mainline station during a summer heatwave. It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we also see a stressed and exasperated-looking commuter walking past this kiosk with a Starbucks coffee container in hand, needing to get into work rather than take public transport. As a result of the industrial action, the busses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk.

  • In fine, late-summer weather, an eleven year-old girl gingerly steps over a stile on the coastal path at Carregwastad Point, near Strumble Head, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Steadying herself with a walking pole, she climbs over wearing trainers rather than stout walking boots as this path is gentle for younger outdoor enthusiasts. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is the first National Trail in Wales. Opened in 1970, the path is almost entirely contained within the boundaries of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park that takes in 17 Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSI), two nature reserves, and Wales' only marine nature reserve. The cliff tops offer wonderful expanses of wildflowers in Spring (April and May are best). Wide variety of birds nest along the cliffs, and grey seals can often be seen in the water below.

  • A man walks down a street practicing the form of juggling called three-ball cascade. Walking past a stall of oranges and apples, the tennis balls are seen in mid-air, having been thrown from one hand, to land in the other. The juggler starts with two balls in one hand and the third ball in the other hand. One ball is thrown from the first hand in an arc to the other hand. Before catching this ball the juggler must throw the ball in the receiving hand, in a similar arc, to the first hand. Because the hands must move up and down when throwing and catching, putting this movement together causes the left hand to move in a counter clockwise motion, and the right hand to move in a clockwise motion.
