  • Looking down into a steep-sided valley, Distant streets and working-class terraced homes are beyond smoking chimneys from a Furnacite coking plant at Abercwmboi. Once known as the worst polluter in Britain it was owned by the National Coal Board (NCB) and sold to the Welsh Development Asoociation (WDA) for £1 Pound though arguments are still raging about how to clear it up and cleanup estimates range from £15-£20 million. The pollution had cruel effects on the local population. It made smokeless coal and locals joked that the plant took the smoke out and dumped it on the Cynon Valley but there was concern about toxic waste dumped in the village after the plant’s closure and some suffered birth defects. Ironically, the plant was closed because of environmental considerations.

  • A woman rock climber hangs on to a small piece of rock and is suspended by ropes. Mid-way between two points of safe, rock handholds, the lady stretches across the limestone, safely tethered to her partner higher up the rock face. The rock forms one small part of The Great Orme (Welsh: Y Gogarth or Pen y Gogarth), a prominent limestone headland on the north coast of Wales situated in Llandudno. It is referred to as Cyngreawdr Fynydd in a poem by the 12th century poet Gwalchmai ap Meilyr. It is echoed by the Little Orme, a smaller but very similar limestone headland, which is on the other side of Llandudno Bay in the parish of Llanrhos. The geology of the Great Orme is limestone and the surface is particularly noted for the limestone pavements covering several headland areas. There are also rich seams of Dolomite-hosted copper ore.

  • On a bright summer afternoon, a young spoiled girl shows-off by riding her favourite motorized Barbie trike along The Parade, the main promenade in the north Welsh seaside town of Llandudno, Wales. Wearing a bright pink helmet and travelling on the matching pink toy bike, she trundles along with the low-tide coast over her left shoulder. Barbie is a best-selling fashion doll launched in 1959 and produced by Mattel, Inc. The brand's merchandising reaches far and wide to countries and cultures around the world and this little girl seems to be the happiest on the beach, enjoying a generous present perhaps from a parent. She is the exact age that Mattel are targeting when they market these toys to accompany their dolls and accessories though the industry has come under fire for its controversial stereotyping of gender and subtle sexuality.
