The Truman is the largest and newest of the US Navy's fleet of new generation carriers, a 97,000 ton floating city with a crew of  5,137, 650 are women. The Iraqi no-fly zones (NFZs) were proclaimed by the United States, United Kingdom and France after the Gulf War of 1991 to protect humanitarian operations in northern Iraq and Shiite Muslims in the south. Iraqi aircraft were forbidden from flying inside the zones. The policy was enforced by US, UK and French aircraft patrols until France withdrew in 1998.

Wearing military green overalls and fluorescent tabard, the 'line' engineers from the elite team come to the aid of an arrived Hawk jet after another training flight at RAF Scampton, their UK base. The men are members of the team's support ground crew (called the Blues because of their distinctive blue overalls worn at summer air shows). The team's support ground crew who outnumber the pilots 8:1 and without them, the Red Arrows couldn't fly. Eleven trades are imported from some sixty that the RAF employs and teaches.

  • Harrier and Jaguar, a grand scale art installation by artist Fiona Banner in the main space Duveen Galleries in Tate Britain gallery. The two stripped down decommissioned fighter jets dominate these great spaces. A Harrier Jump Jet, suspended from the ceiling painted with feint feathers, and the Jaguar, stripped of all ot's paint and polished to a gleaming high silver. Says the artist: "I remember long sublime walks in the Welsh mountains with my father, when suddenly a fighter plane would rip through the sky , and shatter everything. It was so exciting, loud and overwhelming. It would really take our breath away. The sound would arrive from nowhere, all you would see was a shadow and then the plane was gone. At the time the Jump Jets were at the cutting edge of technology but to me they were like dinosaurs, prehistoric, from a time before words."

  • Some of the 529 (correct at July 2012) signed up Virgin Galactic astronauts gather by SpaceShipTwo model for another announcement by company executives at a PR event during the Farnborough Air Show. Virgin Galactic is one of the leading potential space tourism groups, is planning to begin passenger service aboard the VSS Enterprise, a Scaled Composites SpaceShipTwo type spacecraft. The initial seat price is $200,000, with a required down payment of $20,000. Headed by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group, Virgin Galactic hopes to be the first private space tourism company to regularly send civilians into space. A citizen astronaut will only require three days of training before spaceflight.

The Scaled Composites Model 339 SpaceShipTwo (SS2) is a suborbital, air-launched spaceplane, designed for space tourism. It is under development by The Spaceship Company, a California-based joint venture between Scaled Composites and the Virgin Group, as part of the Tier 1b program. The Virgin Galactic spaceline plans to operate a fleet of five SpaceShipTwo spaceplanes in a private passenger-carrying service, starting in late 2013 and are already taking bookings, with a suborbital flight carrying a ticket price of US$200,000. The duration of the flights will be approximately 2.5 hours, though only a few minutes of that will be in space.

  • Visitors ponder the installation of artist Fiona Banner's fighter jet art work 'Harrier and Jaguar' which is exhibited in the south Duveens gallery at Tate Britain, London. This Sea Harrier aircraft was once in service with the Royal Air Force (RAF). It's serial number was ZE695 and the first flight was in 1988, crashing after its pilot ejected in 2000. Its insertion into the gallery was by dismantling the fuselage and re-assembling in situ. Its nose points a few inches from the ground and we see it's now empty cockpit. Banner's art is concerned with flying machines of war that flow low over her as a child in Wales. They may be machines of war but also have the personalities of hanging or submissive birds or beasts, nudes or totems, provoking the idea of body and machine in intimate confrontation. The show runs 28 June 2010 – 3 January 2011.

Prazeres Cemetery Cemitério dos Prazeres is the largest cemetery in Lisbon, Portugal, located in the west part of the city in the former Prazeres parish. It was created in 1833 after the outbreak of a cholera epidemic. Many famous Portuguese citizens are buried here, including artists, authors and government figures, and the cemetery features many large mausoleums built in the 19th century.

  • In fading afternoon sunlight, after the mid-day heat of the arid Sonoran desert are the remains of TWA Boeing 747s and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 airliners which sit as if in a take-off queue at the storage facility at Mojave airport, California. Here, the fate of the world’s retired civil airliners is decided by age or a cooling economy and are either cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium fuselages worth more than their sum total. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their once-magnificent engineering.   • The main nose wheel of a British Airways airliner is parked on a stand at Heathrow Airport. The identifying names of the Boeing type range such as 777s, 767, 747 and 757s are also stencilled on the apron concrete to allow exact distances for expandable air bridges and other airfield vehicles to connect and service these differing-sized commercial airliners. The pilot has devices inside and outside to gauge the exact spot to break to a standstill though these marks are largely unsighted to them, high up in the cockpit. As the last light of the day fades and a departing aircraft's lights streak across the sky, the brightness of terminal lights shine through massive panes of window glass. At a cost of £4.3 billion, the 400m long T5 is the largest free-standing building in the UK with the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year.   • Boeing executives meet Korean Airlines officials at an evening event during the bi-annual aerospace industry expo at the Farnborough airshow in southern England. While handshakes and grins outwardly show the aviation business deal, both client and customers are happy to have concluded this deal between important aviation partners. As of June 2013, the Korean airlines aircraft fleet consisted of 146 planes - of which 117 were Boeing and just 29 Airbus.

The F-35 Lightning II is a fifth-generation, single-seat, single-engine stealth multi-role fighter that can perform close air support, tactical bombing, and air defence missions. The F-35 is descended from the X-35, the product of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. Its development is being principally funded by the United States, with the United Kingdom and other partner governments providing additional funding. It is being designed and built by an aerospace industry team led by Lockheed Martin with Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems as major partners. The F-35's first flight took place on 15 December 2006. The US intends to buy a total of 2,443 aircraft for an estimated US$323 billion, making it the most expensive defense program ever.[

It is the world's largest passenger airliner, and many airports have upgraded facilities to accommodate its size. Based in Blagnac, France, a suburb of Toulouse, with production and manufacturing facilities mainly in France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, the company produced 626 airliners in 2013. At the 2014 show, Airbus announced new business worth more than $75m for 496 aircraft, a new record for the company.

  • A jet aircraft flies past the newly-completed One World Trade Center (WTC) on what was Ground Zero on the September 11th 2001 attacks on New York City, USA. As an ironic coincidence, we see the airliner flying high over Manhattan, passing the tall skyscraper that is being finished. The 104-story supertall structure, which shares a name with the northern Twin Tower in the original World Trade Center that was destroyed in the September 11 attacks, stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre (6.5 ha) World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. It was architect Daniel Libeskind who won the 2002 competition to develop a master plan for the World Trade Center's redevelopment.

Virgin Galactic is one of the leading potential space tourism groups, is planning to begin passenger service aboard the VSS Enterprise, a Scaled Composites SpaceShipTwo type spacecraft. The initial seat price is $200,000, with a required down payment of $20,000. Headed by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group, Virgin Galactic hopes to be the first private space tourism company to regularly send civilians into space. A citizen astronaut will only require three days of training before spaceflight.

The Scaled Composites Model 339 SpaceShipTwo (SS2) is a suborbital, air-launched spaceplane, designed for space tourism. It is under development by The Spaceship Company, a California-based joint venture between Scaled Composites and the Virgin Group, as part of the Tier 1b program. The Virgin Galactic spaceline plans to operate a fleet of five SpaceShipTwo spaceplanes in a private passenger-carrying service, starting in late 2013 and are already taking bookings, with a suborbital flight carrying a ticket price of US$200,000. The duration of the flights will be approximately 2.5 hours, though only a few minutes of that will be in space.

  • Once the wartime armed forces sweetheart, Dame Vera Lynn makes an appearance near a replica Spitfire fighter plane at the 70th anniversary of WW2 Battle of Britain. Seventy years ago, Winston Churchill made one of his most stirring speeches in Parliament to praise the Battle of Britain aircrews who had fought off the threat of Nazi invasion during the summer of 1940. In the 1940s, Dame Vera's personality warmed those fighting abroad, her voice singing some of the most stirring ballads that allied soldiers, sailors and airmen heard to remind them of home. Here she stands beneath the full-size model of the Merlin-powered propeller of this iconic fighter that helped stop a full-scale Nazi invasion of the British Isles.

  • Visitors ponder the installation of artist Fiona Banner's fighter jet art work 'Harrier and Jaguar' which is exhibited in the south Duveens gallery at Tate Britain, London. This Sea Harrier aircraft was once in service with the Royal Air Force (RAF). It's serial number was ZE695 and the first flight was in 1988, crashing after its pilot ejected in 2000. Its insertion into the gallery was by dismantling the fuselage and re-assembling in situ. Its nose points a few inches from the ground and we see it's now empty cockpit. Banner's art is concerned with flying machines of war that flow low over her as a child in Wales. They may be machines of war but also have the personalities of hanging or submissive birds or beasts, nudes or totems, provoking the idea of body and machine in intimate confrontation. The show runs 28 June 2010 – 3 January 2011.

Developed in the 1970s by the Mikoyan design bureau, it entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1983, and remains in use by the Russian Air Force as well as in many other nations.

  • Scheduled maintenance on a Hawk Mk 1 jet in the hangar of the Red Arrows, Britain's RAF aerobatic team. Engineering specialists called the Blues perform routine maintenance in the Red Arrows team hangar. They are ground-based back-up crew (so-called after their distinctive blue overalls worn only during the summer) and perform routine engineering tasks in the hangar at RAF Scampton, then while on tour, keeping the jets serviceable and ready to display. The Blues outnumber the pilots 8:1. Without them, the Red Arrows couldn't fly. Some of the team's Hawks are 25 years old and their air frames require constant attention, with increasingly frequent major overhauls due.

The man is a member of the team's support ground crew (called the Blues because of their distinctive blue overalls worn at summer air shows). The team's support ground crew who outnumber the pilots 8:1 and without them, the Red Arrows couldn't fly. Eleven trades are imported from some sixty that the RAF employs and teaches.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, mid-size wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It seats 210 to 290 passengers, depending on the variant. Boeing states that it is the company's most fuel-efficient airliner and the world's first major airliner to use composite materials for most of its construction. According to Boeing, the 787 consumes 20% less fuel than the similarly-sized 767.

Close to a million populate the mass fly-in over the week, a pilgrimage worshipping all aspects of flight. The event annually generates $85 million in revenue over a 25 mile radius from Oshkosh. The event is presented by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), a national/international organization based in Oshkosh.   • A policeman and the devastated fuselage of a British Midland Airways Boeing 737-400 series jet airliner which lies on an embankment of the M1 motorway at Kegworth, near East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire, England. On the night of 8th January 1989, flight 92 crashed due to the shutting down of the wrong, malfunctioning engine. Attempting an emergency landing, 47 people died and 74 people, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries. The aircraft's tail snapped upright at ninety degrees and here perished most of the passenger fatalities. The devastation was hampered by woodland and the fire fighters are attempting to rescue survivors or extract those killed in this air disaster that proved one of Britain's worst.

  • Emergency crews and the devastated fuselage of a British Midland Airways Boeing 737-400 series jet airliner which lies on an embankment of the M1 motorway at Kegworth, near East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire, England. On the night of 8th January 1989, flight 92 crashed due to the shutting down of the wrong, malfunctioning engine. Attempting an emergency landing, 47 people died and 74 people, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries. The aircraft's tail snapped upright at ninety degrees and here perished most of the passenger fatalities. The devastation was hampered by woodland and the fire fighters are attempting to rescue survivors or extract those killed in this air disaster that proved one of Britain's worst.

  • Wing tips and tails from British Airways 747-400 jet airliners are almost touching during their respective turnrounds while on the apron outside Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 building. A passing aircraft taxies past on the left and the other two planes have wingtip devices increase the lift generated at the wingtip which smooth the airflow across the upper wing near the tip and reduce the lift-induced drag caused by wingtip vortices. As the last light of the day fades, the brightness of terminal lights shine through massive panes of window glass. At a cost of £4.3 billion, the 400m long T5 is the largest free-standing building in the UK with the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year.   • A young girl in transit between India and the US, entertains herself by throwing her pet toy tiger as far as the ceiling in a departure window of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. In front of a Boeing 777 jet airliner's nose and cockpit, the girl is a silhouette against the large windows that allow in the natural light. Behind the parked aircraft, another British Airways passenger jet taxies past, its tail at right-angles to the stationary airplane although they both look like the same plane. With her family baggage next to her, the child is enjoying some hours of freedom before another long-haul flight westwards.
