  • A dystopian landscape of construction materials and an inspirational view above the city - seen through a wire and netting street fence. Lettering on the hoarding tells us the scene below is inspirational, a capital from a new perspective. But the mess of aggregates and soil, tools and rubble tell a different story: an incongruous landscape of an idealised city and the reality of unfinished work.

  • Construction hoarding showing apartment interior and shovel with sand for making concrete. The poster is on a screen hiding the workings of construction and mess to street life outside. The mound of sand ballast and fine aggregate with the shovel embedded in the materials appear to be part of the same picture behind - the living space of a modern lifestyle high above the city whose floor is the same colour and hue of the sand.

  • Working in a dark corner of Desford Brickworks, the factory owned by Hanson Brick in Leicestershire, a labourer pats his clay aggregate into a clod (also known as a clot or warp) a lump of kneaded clay formed into a rough brick shape by hand in preparation for being thrown into the mould (or mold) and shaped once again with a stock. He will then skim off the surplus with the bow - a wire stretched between the ends of a curved wooden rod used for removing excess clay from the mould, which hangs on the wall by a nail. The stage afterwards is the firing in the kiln. Obviously the mechanisation of brick making endangers the careers of skilled craftsmen like this man. <br />
Bricks may be made from clay, shale, soft slate, calcium silicate, concrete, or shaped from quarried stone but Clay is the most common material.

  • Old Communist graffiti adorns the walls of a crumbling building as an elderly lady walks past. Heroic but peeling portraits and slogans adorn the plater wall reminder passers-by of previous era when Portuguese politics were more turbulent. The Portuguese Communist Party is a major left-wing political party in Portugal. It is a Marxist-Leninist party based upon democratic centralism. The party was founded in 1921 but made illegal after a coup in the late 1920s. The PCP played a major role in the opposition to the dictatorial regime of António de Oliveira Salazar. After the bloodless Carnation Revolution in 1974 which overthrew the 48-year regime, the 36 members of party's Central Committee had, in the aggregate, experienced more than 300 years in jail.
