Surrounded by tall beech trees the sign shows details for the sale including the name of auction holder's name Hollis Morgan and information of the land's 6.5 acre plot of prime woods with sporting (shooting) rights. Dead leaves from the previous autumn mulch down underfoot where Victorian lime mines were once a thriving local industry.

  • Ladies attending the first-ever international Conference on Womens' Challenge in Darfur, raise their hands in the hope of peace while gathering to hear speeches by the British peer Lord Ahmed and traditional songs by local singers just outside the compound walls belonging to the Governor of North Darfur in Al Fasher (also spelled, Al-Fashir) where the women from remote parts of Sudan gathered to discuss peace and political issues and celebrate Darfurian culture. The Sudanese Women General Union has 27,000 branches all over Sudan, including Darfur. They have representatives in all rural villages, across communities of around 80 tribes and clans. The women of Sudan are wives, mothers, farmers a real force and historically, there have been female leaders.

  • Deep in the West Sussex countryside are a group of Territorial Army soldiers. They have stopped in a remote lane to consult their Ordnance Survey maps during a day of learning to navigate with maps and compasses. Over a weekend learn the skills needed to be part-time army volunteers known as the TA and have far to go. Together they look at maps and argue where they should go next. Looking on with mild amusement is their senior officer who accompanies them to assess their leadership skills and initiative. Behind them a road sign tells them the road ahead is a dead end to traffic. It is a very English summer landscape of lush green vegetation and grasses. The TA work as part of Britain’s reserve land forces. Together with the Regular Army they provide support at home and overseas including Iraq and Afghanistan. .

  • Londoners experience the unexpected intensity of localised solar rays, reflected off the concave plate glass windows of one of the capital's newest skyscrapers known as the Walkie Talkie. The hotspot has surprised developers and passers-by below and which has already melted a parked car and left soft street fittings smouldering in Eastcheap Street, City of London, the capital's financial district. Thermometers placed in the street reached 144F (62 celcius) and city workers poured out of their offices at lunchtime to winess the strange phenomena of intense light and heat.

  • A crowd of workers listen to speeches by their trade union during a council strike in Liverpool. A sea of faces looks towards us, their expressions serious and concerned at the loss of their jobs and livelihoods. Their trade union has organised this meeting out in the open air in the city centre, a protest against unfair reduction of earnings and an erosion of working conditions. These people are English Liverpool council workers recently made redundant and have gathered in the city centre to express their willingness to act againist their former-employers.

  • Two young businessmen sit outside a deli/cafe laughing over the contents of a laptop in the City of London. The two associates seem to find the subject of their meeting amusing and smile with each other on a street opposite Royal Exchange in the heart of the capital's financial district, founded by the Romans in the 1st Century. In the background we see the lettering on the window of the Italian cafe who boast worldwide locations like Milan, Rome, Turin, London, Tokyo and New York - all presitgious cities for business and fine dining.

  • From high above the stacked crates and pallets of duty free merchandise at the British Airports Authority (BAA) secure facility near London Heathrow airport, a blurred forklift truck drives down a corridor moving fast away from two people in the background. In the foreground yellow boxes contain Gordon's Gin and Benson & Hedges cigarettes destined for the airports and aircraft leaving BAA terminals. We see the diagonal lane in this warehouse the size of a hangar, so vast is its scale. The workers in the distance appear dwarfed against the tall shelves of merchandise that they need to organise and keep a tally of. It is a picture of ultimate organisation and the efficient transporting of goods in and out of this logistics hub.

  • Don Kent, local residenty: We are facing a real emergency on climate change and we have signed up to the Paris agreement and this part of a climate dissaster. This is the last gasp by Banks making some money out of burning dirty coal. Day of protest in Pont Valley against the extraction of coal by the mining company Banks outside Dipton in Pont Valley, 5 May 2018 , County Durham, United Kingdom. Locals have fought the open cast coal mine for thirty years and three times the local council rejected planning permissions but central government has overruled that decision and the company Banks was granted the license and rights to extract coal in early 2018. Locals have teamed up with climate campaigners and together they try to prevent the mining from going ahead. The mining will have huge implications on the local environment and further coal extraction runs agains the Paris climate agreement. A rare species of crested newt is said to live on the land planned for mining and protectors are trying to stop the mine to save the newt.
