  • During the morning rush-hour at Bank underground station in the heart of London's financial district, the grim face of 90s tube travel is seen here in a wide landscape of rounded tunnel and the curve of the station platform. Londoners are sandwiched inside the nearest carriage. Waiting for the doors to close and the hot air to seal them inside the small space, men and women press against each other in a claustrophobic journey along the Central Line. The Central line is a London Underground line, coloured red on the tube map. It is a deep-level "tube" line, running east-west across London, and, at 76 km (47 mi). Incorporated in 1891 it is today the longest Underground line and also the busiest with around 260 million passengers a year.

  • Now an overgrown, mildew-ridden farm shack in woodland in Seething, Norfolk England, this wall mural was once one of the barracks housing 3,000 young World War 2 bomber crews so was probably painted by a young aspiring artist and aviator with the 448th Bomb Group, a fleet of bombers based in England from November 1943 to July 1945. The picture depicts a confrontation between US Air Force B-24 Liberators, a P-51 Mustang and probably a German Dornier. There are hairline cracks in the plaster but the yellow hue of the hand-painted wall is largely intact despite damp conditions in the shed. There are however, other artistic details now faded. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth.

  • An aircraft cleaner from Kathmandu, Nepal, stands in white overalls with his bucket and mop on the tarmac at Bahrain International airport. It is another hot day in this key hub airport in this Gulf region, providing a gateway to the Northern Gulf. The airport is the major hub for Gulf Air which provides 52% of overall movements and is also the half-way point between Western Europe and Asian destinations such as Hong Kong and Beijing. Gulf states also rely on the workforces from south-Asia such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh whose wages are often low and harsh living conditions compared to local nationals and tourists who enjoy superior accommodation. • Courier bike is locked up on post near yellow and red stripes on office building side street. Propped up against a lamp post which as a cigarette butt and gum receptacle and near a parking payment unit, the bicycle has bright orange wheels and handlebars. On the wall in the background are yellow-sprayed stripes that go off into the distance. A discarded bottle of water lies in the gutter and a coffee cup has been wedged into the air conditioning grill.

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.

  • In fading afternoon sunlight, after the mid-day heat of the arid Sonoran desert are the remains of TWA Boeing 747s and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 airliners which sit as if in a take-off queue at the storage facility at Mojave airport, California. Here, the fate of the world’s retired civil airliners is decided by age or a cooling economy and are either cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium fuselages worth more than their sum total. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their once-magnificent engineering. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk, 1903.

Sitting with legs gathered and with shoes removed - in the manner that people subjected to fierce desert or tropical heat try to keep cool, although in this airpirt terminal building, air-conditioning allows more comfort. The young man works on building projects somewhere in the middle-east region and is either in transit of beginning his jounrey to India, Pakistan or perhaps Bangladesh, seen here months before the terrorist attacks on America that changed the public's attitude to flying on commercial airliners.

  • Balloons float overhead during the mass lift-off by balloons at Bristols annual fiesta at Long Ashton, UK. Taking off into early morning summer skies above England's southwest City, the airships rise from the heat of hot air burners. Crowds from across the city arive with BBQs and picnics and children to sit and wait for the green smoke that signals a Go. Once airbourne, the balloons start to climb only a short distance, to land a few hundred metres away on this particular morning's stll air conditions. • Now an overgrown, mildew-ridden farm shack in woodland in Seething, Norfolk England, this wall mural was once formed part of the barracks housing 3,000 young World War 2 bomber crews so was probably painted by a young aspiring artist and aviator with the USAAF's 448th Bomb Group, a fleet of bombers based in England from November 1943 to July 1945. After the war, the buildings reverted to agricultural use.

  • A flight nurse examines a lady from the Native American Reserve at San Carlos, Arizona, from where she is to be taken from the rural Arizona airstrip by twin-propeller powered aircraft, an air ambulance, to hospital for treatment. The San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, in southeastern Arizona, United States, was established in 1872 as a reservation for the Chiricahua Apache tribe. It was referred to by some as "Hell's Forty Acres," due to a myriad of dismal health and environmental conditions. The San Carlos Reservation is one of the poorest Native American communities in the United States, with an annual median household income of approximately $14,000 in 2000, according to the US Census. About 60% of the people live under the poverty line, and 68% of the active labor force is unemployed

  • Ducks are kept on top of chickens in terrible conditions at a wet market in central Shanghai on Renmin Lu (Rd.) and Fangbang Lu. In temperatures of 40 degrees and higher, these birds were kept without water, covered in faeces, gasping for air. With Bird Flu cases increasing Worldwide, and especially in Asia, the problems of keeping these birds in close proximity is well known as flu passes between birds and species. Not so in this case by the owner of these ducks and chickens, unaware of the risks of Avian Flu.

  • A crowd of workers listen to speeches by their trade union during a council strike in Liverpool. A sea of faces looks towards us, their expressions serious and concerned at the loss of their jobs and livelihoods. Their trade union has organised this meeting out in the open air in the city centre, a protest against unfair reduction of earnings and an erosion of working conditions. These people are English Liverpool council workers recently made redundant and have gathered in the city centre to express their willingness to act againist their former-employers.
