  • Military air traffic controller Flight Lieutenant Barrie Robinson is on duty in the control tower at RAF Scampton, home base of the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team. RAF controllers liaise with civilian air authorities to ensure safe travel for any aircraft using their airspace, manning communications and airfield safety, the officer wears a headset with which to speak to air crew and ground-based personnel. Scampton is not the busy airfield that other stations are where larger squadrons are based but the Red Arrows fly their training sorties from here up to six times a day in the winter months then use this as a base from which to fly their summer air shows.

  • A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340 crosses the perimeter fence at Heathrow Airport on its way to an international destination. Seen from below, the passing Jumbo takes-off and climbs under full take-off power over the surrounding airfield security fence. Its razor-wire is an effective deterrent against protesters or terrorists and symbolises the lengths that airport authorities (in this case BAA) need go to to ensure their property is safe.   • An Airbus A380 is parked nose to tail with it's rival in the airline world, a Boeing 777 belonging to the Etihad Airways. They are both static exhibits at Britain's Farnborough Airshow and are on the ground before their afternoon flying displays delighting potential buyers of these jet aircraft, and the aviation-loving general public. These are the airplane giants and their bidding for airline contracts and orders is a fierce on-going fight for dominance in the world's skies. The teo planes are low in the picture to emphasize the blue skies above. Etihad's emblem seen on the tail is that of a falcon while the Airbus is a generic demonstrator that flies around the world on a continuous marketing tour.

  • On a grey day in the metropolis of Hong Kong, a giant airliner belonging to an Asian airline passes overhead, seemingly just over the roofs of apartment buildings and offices. The aircraft is nearly at the point of touching down on the runway which is just beyond this street in Kowloon district in the days when Hong Kong was still a British colony and before its handover to Chinese law. The dominating shape of the jet is flying into the former airport called Kai Tak whose runway jutted out into the city’s harbour before the airfield was closed and a new location was opened in an outlying island. We look up to see a wide expanse of overcast sky with the red vertical Cantonese characters of a local business and which echoes the red beacon on the plane’s belly that flashes during the last moments of flight before the actual landing.

It is one of the Clee Hills, in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Most of the summit of the hill is affected by man-made activity, the result of hill fort construction during the Bronze and Iron Ages and, more recently, by years of mining for coal and quarrying for dolerite, known locally as dhustone, for use in road-building. Many derelict quarry buildings scattered over the hill are of industrial archaeological interest as very early examples of the use of reinforced concrete. Several radar domes and towers operate on the summit of the hill. The largest of the radar arrays is part of the National Air Traffic Services NATS radar network, and covers one of 30 overlapping regions of UK airspace. The one on Titterstone Clee monitors all aircraft within a 100-mile radius.

  • Cases of Rapier surface-to-air missile equipment stationed on Blackheath, a security measure in readiness for the London 2012 Olympic games. The Rapiers arrived in Blackheath yesterday in a bid to defend London against a "worst-case scenario" 9/11-style attack. As part of a multi-layered defence system installed around the capital during the games in July 2012, the missiles are positioned here and other sites during an exercise named Olympic Guardian, which began earlier this week on the coast and in London's airspace. RAF Air Vice-Marshall Stuart Atha said the missiles were for the "worst-case scenario" of a "very unlikely attack" on the Games and chose Blackheath as one of six "favourite" sites.

  • Rapier surface-to-air missiles stationed on Blackheath, a security measure in readiness for the London 2012 Olympic games. The Rapiers arrived in Blackheath yesterday in a bid to defend London against a "worst-case scenario" 9/11-style attack. As part of a multi-layered defence system installed around the capital during the games in July 2012, the missiles are positioned here and other sites during an exercise named Olympic Guardian, which began earlier this week on the coast and in London's airspace. RAF Air Vice-Marshall Stuart Atha said the missiles were for the "worst-case scenario" of a "very unlikely attack" on the Games and chose Blackheath as one of six "favourite" sites.

Viewed through the foliage and flowers of a garden shrub, the plane descends in slightly hazy skies above south London, where aircraft pass overhead a few thousand feet above suburban homes, the plane is seen as a diagonal, edging across the airspace on its way to the runways at Heathrow airport, approximately 20 miles to the West.   • New first year pilots of the Red Arrows, Britain's RAF aerobatic team discuss new manoeuvres at RAF Scampton. Flt. Lts. Jezz griggs and Matt Jarvis discuss the finer points of an aerobatic manoeuvre recently taught in the crew room. They will soon be putting this formation into practice in the air of their RAF Scampton airspace. Using two scaled model Hawk jet aircraft Griggs shows how their formation is to be flown on their next training flight. Five autumn and winter months are spent teaching new recruits manual aerobatic display flying while the older members (who rotate positions) learn new disciplines within the routine. Their leaning curve is steep, even for these accomplished fast-jet aviators who had already accumulated 1,500 hours in fighters. By Summer they need every aspect of their 25-minute displays honed to perfection.

Flt. Lt. Dave Mason shows the finer points of an aerobatic manoeuvre in the crew briefing room. They will soon be putting this formation into practice in the air of their RAF Scampton airspace. Using magnetic models of Hawk jet aircraft Mason shows how their formation is to be flown on their next training flight. Five autumn and winter months are spent teaching new recruits manual aerobatic display flying while the older members (who rotate positions) learn new disciplines within the routine. Their leaning curve is steep, even for these accomplished fast-jet aviators who had already accumulated 1,500 hours in fighters. By Summer they need every aspect of their 25-minute displays honed to perfection.

  • HMS Ocean of the Royal Navy edges upstream on the River Thames towards Greenwich ahead of a major security exercise in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games. Ocean is an amphibious assault ship (or landing platform helicopter), the sole member of her class and the Royal Navy's largest ship, here to act as a launch pad for eight army Lynx helicopters and a base for Royal Marine snipers, able to shoot at the engines of fast-moving targets. It is the final phase of the exercise named Olympic Guardian, which began on the coast and in the airspace over the capital. During the Olympics, Ocean will be moored in Greenwich to provide logistics support, accommodation to 9 Assault Squadron Royal Marines and a helicopter landing site. The 203.4m (667 ft) long, 21,500 tonnes Ocean was constructed in the mid 90s at a cost of £234 million.

  • Cases of Rapier surface-to-air missile equipment stationed on Blackheath, a security measure in readiness for the London 2012 Olympic games. The Rapiers arrived in Blackheath yesterday in a bid to defend London against a "worst-case scenario" 9/11-style attack. As part of a multi-layered defence system installed around the capital during the games in July 2012, the missiles are positioned here and other sites during an exercise named Olympic Guardian, which began earlier this week on the coast and in London's airspace. RAF Air Vice-Marshall Stuart Atha said the missiles were for the "worst-case scenario" of a "very unlikely attack" on the Games and chose Blackheath as one of six "favourite" sites.

  • Looking up from the ground to the underside of a jet airliner passing overhead in bright skies, blurred purposely using a slow camera speed, creating a separate, staggered double-image. In slightly hazy skies above south London, where aircraft pass overhead a few thousand feet above suburban homes, the plane is seen as a diagonal, edging across the airspace on its way to the runways at Heathrow airport, approximately 20 miles to the West. The jet is generic, minus airline markings though we see it is a twin-engined model, its two powerplants mounted on the rear section of the fuselage.
