  • Street sign for Needless Alley in central Birmingham, United Kingdom. Needless Alley is a little passage north off New Street. From the late 18th century Birmingham’s planners set about removing passages, and alleys, seeing as them as useless for commerce, and unsavoury. The survival of the alleyway was certainly never assured. In 1829, the Birmingham Journal said it was ‘needless by name and needless by nature’.

  • A music shop has moved from Denmark Street in London's famous Tin Pan Alley, a result of lease issues and rent hikes. A sign stretches across the width of the shutters telling customers that business has moved away from this iconic street known in the music industry as the centre of music publishing and musical instruments, primarily guitars, percussion, keyboards and sheet music. Pop music stars and rock bands like Elton John and the Rolling Stones have had their careers launched from Denmark Street where those who controlled the music business had their offices. With the disappearance of these businesses, come cafes and a gentrification that will soon see Tin Pan Alley as quirky in name only.

Today we see this rarely apart from courtyards like this in west London. The walls are made fromclassic London stock bricks but the colours of a vibrant 21st century Britain are seen strung along the line.

  • In a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England, we see many black bin-bags are left against industrial brick walls awaiting collection during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. The cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses are in a poor area, south of the city centre and home to deprived families. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs now exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • Lonely tree in Clarksdale seems to echo the loneliness of the blues heritage in the town. Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith and ZZ Top are some of the many musicians who have put Clarksdale on the map: with its own blues museum on Blues Alley it is no surprise to hear that Clarksdale it is famous for being ‘the birth place of the Blues’. However the cotton pickers migration north after the introduction of mechanization took something of the blues soul with them with the blues museum as important an institution as any of the remaining blues joints .
