  • A street sweeper with contractor Amey brushes round a leaning automatic traffic control bollard in St . Swithins Lane, City of London. The workman wears a high-vis jacket and trousers with a bright red hat and he reaches awkwardly behind the damaged pole that leans at an odd angle, seemingly hit by a vehicle. Behind him is swept litter that he will deposit into his bin trolley. It is an odd scene of irregularity in otherwise regimented urban streets of the capital's financial centre aka The Square Mile, founded by the Romans in the 1st century.

  • A leaning traffic light pole and covered others in a City of London street. Damaged perhaps by a vehicle that has crashed into the post and making it stand at an odd angle, it contradicts the stance of the man at the front, about to cross the road. The location is in the City of London, the heart of the capital's financial district and where roadworks have disabled the traffic lights covered with orange covers so pedestrians need to take care when crossing the street.

  • An elderly man shields his eyes from bright light while walking along Piccadilly in late afternoon sunshine. Holding his hand across his eyes, the man walks westwards along this fashionable shopping street from Piccadilly Circus in the direction of Hyde Park Corner. He seemingly walks alongside a younger woman and many other commuters are heading the same way, all walking or about to pause at the bus stops along this street that will take them home or in the direction of Victoria Station. The picture is shot from a low angle and the subjects are unaware of all but their direction, pace and eagerness to reach home.

  • During the Cannes Film Festival, we see a group of women taken from a very low angle , posing in bikinis and revealing swim wear for a frenzy of photographers on La Croisette, Cannes' sea front in the French Riviera resort, Cote d'Azur. One blonde girl is looking down into the camera while we see only the hips, arms, and legs of the others as they parade their bodies in front of the media who are grouped tightly together with cameras and a sound microphone. Young women publicising movies or just themselves regularly strut along the beaches and pavements of this French town. The weather is typically bright for May with clear skies and high temperatures. Cannes is a major tourist centre and a leading resort on the French Riviera. • Viewed from a low angle, an unidentified youth is seen spraying graffiti art on to a wall in the Notting Hill area of West London, England. We see his partially-obscured face lit from behind with a strong amount of flash which throws a well-defined shadow of his hand holding a spray can. It is a chilly night and the boy's breath is seen against the frosty night air. His graffiti art has taken him some hours to spray on this white wall and shows a glossy finish. The picture is anonymous because of the young man's face is unseen and generic, because we don't see where the wall might be located.

  • From a low angle looking upwards to the building exterior of the Hotel Negresco on the Promenade de Anglais, Nice. We see the colourful orange light bulbs and the overall green hue from sodium illumination and the blue of the evening sky. In the foreground is an example of the ubiquitous palm trees that line the Côte d'Azur. The Hotel Negresco on the Promenade des Anglais on the Baie des Anges in Nice, France was named for Henri Negresco (1868-1920) who had the palatial hotel constructed in 1912. Beneath dozens of colourful lights which hang from cables above their heads, two stand holding drinks while the third speaks into his mobile phone. They are all impeccably dressed in smart jackets and tasteful ties with one owning a carnation in his lapel. It is a lively event that Seville holds annually in the vast fairground area on the far bank of the Guadalquivir River. Rows of temporary marquee tents, or casetas, host families, corporations and friends into the late hours during the April Fair which begins begins two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

  • Overgrown tomb and gravestones are covered by ivy undergrowth in Nunhead Cemetery whose deceased occupants were important members of society from the industrial age. On the left is a memorial (‘With loving memory of Charlotte Catherine, the beloved wife ..”) including an angel figure that leans over at an angle, probably caused by tree roots or perhaps by vandalism during the 50s and 60s when this land was left open for youngsters to commit criminal damage to stonework and carvings. During the cemetery’s annual open day, there is an opportunity for the of the cemetery ‘Friends’ (society) to celebrate and educate Londoners, old and young, to help preserve and conserve this historic site.

  • At the height of financial uncertainty, we see from a low pavement angle investors queueing outside the Maddox Street branch of the troubled Northern Rock Bank, off Regent Street, Mayfair, in September 2007. Their hard-earned savings appear to be in jeopardy after the bank announced an emergency loan from the Bank of England. Despite reassurances from officials who insisted that the Bank which has £113bn in assets, was not in danger of going bust, concerned men and women wait in line, some with their faces on view and reading newspapers or more commonly, wishing to remain anonymous and keeping their backs to reporters and cameras. The rush of customers demanding their investments almost spelled the demise of the bank with over £2bn removed from accounts in a few days. Northern Rock struggled since money markets seized up over the summer.

  • Wearing a company wastecoat and blue rubber gloves, the uniform of a Holiday Inn employee, a man of Black ethnicity bends forward to wipe the glass revolving doors at the entrance of this hotel in Paris. Coincidentally, a customer is also bending down to re-arrange something in her baggage and leaning at the same angle as the cleaner.

  • A father supports his son on his shoulders as a giant four-engined airliner passes directly overhead, about to land at London's Heathrow airport, England. Seen from a low angle, we see the graphic cruciform shape of the aircraft as it screams past two powerful airfield landing lights that help guide arriving aircraft to the runway. The backlit scene is largely monochrome apart from the boys red t-shirt and yellow-faced watch which are lit by flash, underexposing the overcast sky. Prior to 9/11, British airport authorities and police tolerated plane spotters near runway fences but with heightened terrorist alerts, these enthusiasts are told to move on or face arrest. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • A model from the Alion Couture fashion house takes part in a street parade with horses for the benefit of the media in Kensington, central London UK. We see the lower section of a horse ramp and another horse is in the background. Seen from a low angle, both the horses hoof and her foot in red high heel shoes appear to be askew in a postural echo, when two mannerisms or body language are similar. The light is blue because of the shadow both subjects are in but her shoes and matching short red dress appear vibrant in saturation and hue.

  • A young three year-old boy has his hair cut by his mother in the family South London home. Lifting his hair with her fingers, the mum snips with a pair of scissors. While lifting her left elbow to gain the right angle of her cutting, we see her holding a comb in her mouth. The boy's elder sister looks on offering unhelpful comments which will eventually lead to an exchange of unkind words between the siblings while their mother concentrates hard on not making a mess of the kid's haircut. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • Looking upwards towards the back of a number 8 red London bus which passes the pillars of the famous Bank of England building at Cornhill in the City Of London, the financial district, otherwise known as the Square Mile. We see the Bank rising as an imposing classical structure. Its columns are converging because of wide-angle lens-distortion, giving us the image of strength, stability and influence in UK economics. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes. Its distinctive rounded rear bodywork is easily recognisable as that classic British icon.

On the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, the pile of crates is untidy and unstable making them lean at odd angles making the boys hold on to their building projects. They are dressed for a summer afternoon's activity in a seemingly rural location but which is, in fact, an area of inner-city London.

The stripes make for abstract art.
