  • PETA supporters, including one wearing a costume depicting a beaker of water in which a mouse is struggling to stay afloat, protest outside Eli Lilly’s R&D centre to call on the US pharmaceutical company to ban the forced swim test on 29 October 2020 in Bracknell, United Kingdom. Animal rights charity PETA UK contends that the forced swim test during which small animals are dosed with an anti-depressant drug, placed in inescapable beakers filled with water and forced to swim to keep from drowning has been widely discredited and that other pharmaceutical companies including Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Bayer, Roche and AstraZeneca have banned it.

  • A young girl hugs her beloved pony at a gymkhana meeting in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Gymkhana is an Indian Raj term which originally referred to a place where sporting events took place and referred to any of various meets at which contests were held to test the skill of the competitors. In the United Kingdom and east coast of the United States, the term gymkhana now almost always refers to an equestrian event for riders on horses, often with the emphasis on children's participation (such as those organised here by the Pony Club). Gymkhana classes include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole, keg race (also known as "down and back"), flag race, and pole bending.

  • In the calf shed vet Katharine Blease works with Lindsey Hodgson to check on various aspects of the new calves. Taking blood tests, and making sure of the overall health and feeding of the new arrivals. Keeping a healthy herd as well as trying to ensure that each cow has one calf per year and is therefore served within three months of their previous calf, is a big job and requires a weekly visit from the vet, who checks pre and post natal cows, as well as calves. Wildon Grange Dairy Farm, Coxwold, North Yorkshire, UK. Owned and run by the Banks family, dairy farming here is a scientific business. From the breeding, nutrition and health of their closed stock of Holstein Friesian cows, through to the end product, the team here work tirelessly, around to clock to ensure content and healthy animals, and excellent quality milk.

A closed herd with no outside influence from other herds off site (apart from the introduction of a bull) the aim is that the cows have one calf per year to keep them milking and to replenish their stocks. Here Paul Wilson AI Technician from the company Genus tests each animal in the AI shed to see which is at the correct stage of its oestrus cycle and therefore requires insemination. • Artificial insemination plays a very important role to keep the herd at a consistent number. A closed herd with no outside influence from other herds off site (apart from the introduction of a bull) the aim is that the cows have one calf per year to keep them milking and to replenish their stocks. • Two young girls stand with their beloved ponies at a gymkhana in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Adorned with winners’ rosettes, the horses look their finest for the judges. The girls are smart too, wearing the expected jackets and ties, jodhpurs and during competition, helmets too. The word gymkhana is an Indian Raj term which originally referred to a place where sporting events took place and referred to any of various meets at which contests were held to test the skill of the competitors. In the UK and east coast of the US, the term gymkhana now almost always refers to an equestrian event for riders on horses, often with the emphasis on children's participation (such as those organised here by the Pony Club). Gymkhana classes include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole, keg race (also known as "down and back"), flag race, and pole bending.

  • Someone’s pet spaniel is enjoying the smell of another dog’s faeces that has been deposited on the pavement at Newbiggin-by-the-sea in Northumberland, northern England. Using its wet nose to test its acute sense of smell, the spaniel shows great curiosity in another animals crap that has been left by the other animal’s owner, rather than be collected and placed in a dog poo receptacle. The irony is that there is graffiti on the sea wall of this seaside town. The mis-spelled words ‘England For Ever’ have been sprayed in aerosol on the wall and we see someone’s idea of a utopian England and another’s lowered standards where the fouling of a public pavement is seen as acceptable.

  • John Banks working around the farm mixing and delivering specially mixed feeds for each type of animal depending on age and whether they are pregnant or not. Here he is testing the moisture content of wheat to see if it is ready to store. Working with a nutritionist, he makes his own feeds which takes a great deal of his day delivering them around the farm. With this method, as opposed to using ready made feeds, he can ensure the cows receive the nutrients they require at every stage. Wildon Grange Dairy Farm, Coxwold, North Yorkshire, UK.
