  • Seen from a high viewpoint, a young girl rides on her father's shoulders in the middle of the Longleat Hedge Maze. She can barely see over the walls of foliage, so tall is the labyrinth of twisty pathways, and she holds out her hands to brush against the green foliage. Made up of more than 16,000 English Yews, Longleat’s spectacular hedge maze - the world's largest - was first laid out in 1975 by the designer Greg Bright. The Maze covers an area of around 1.48 acres (0.6 hectares) with a total pathway length of 1.69 miles (2.72 kilometres). Unlike most other conventional mazes it’s actually three-dimensional.

  • A market researcher working for the Heathrow Aiport operator BAA, conducts her surveys in the departures concourses of this aviation hub's terminal 5. Asking very detailed but brief questions of this young mother and her rather suspicious daughter, both travelling to the US, the unseen woman employee samples opinion on the airport's performance and the passengers overall experience of using this airport. Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and by analysing the data from these surveys helps the operator discover room for improvement. • A labourer reads a copy of Britain's tabloid Sun Newspaper. The worker holds a coffee and wears a working mans' cap with a pencil in his right ear as he sits in sunshine during a lunch break. In the context of the News International media scandals of 2011, the (daily) Sun is a sister paper to the now defunct (Sunday) News of The World, closed down by proprietor Rupert Murdoch in the light of public outrage over phone hacking. The Sun's own headline refers to the previous day when Murdoch sat before a Parliamentary Select Committee to answer questions about the nature of phone hacking into private voicemails of victims and their grieving families. Murdoch's overall message was the committee grilling was his most humble day.

  • A local man carries electric cabling uphill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With few roads that can transport supplies and raw materials up to remote foothill communities, the only way is often to carry what one needs on the back or by yak. The paths are even but often very steep in places so stamina and endurance are needed to get even modest weights uphill. Nepalis up here often want newer technology and basic electricity to power lights and showers although solar power is another answer.

  • Masked protesters of western leaders Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher kiss at a 1986 demonstration by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) against the hosting by the UK of US nuclear cruise missiles on British soil. Amid a chaotic scene of protest and intimidating police presence, the two unidentified people touch lips outside the US embassy (background) in London’s Grosvenor Square. In the Cold War era, both world leaders Reagan and Thatcher symbolised the special relationship between the US and the UK, who shared a common ideology for conquering the threats of Communist domination. Their answer was for the proliferation of atomic arsenals in order to maintain world stability and public protest was ever-present outside US interests and especially at the many RAF air bases that were leased to the US Air Force from where bombers flew.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, we see visitors watching a re-enactment of a Civil War skirmish at the Gettysburg National Military Park. As a group of Confederate troopers parade on the battlefield, we see printed on a woman tourist's back, the quoted words spoken by President George W Bush on 9/11/01. His rallying call to the nation, answering the demand for vengeance against the 'evil-doers' is included in his rhetoric, reproduced on clothing and on messages displayed around the US. The American Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg was fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and was the one battle with the largest number of casualties: Between 46,000 and 51,000 killed in the three-days in July 1863.

  • The Buddha seen as part of a shrine in the prayer room of Kagyu Samye Ling Buddhist retreat centre in Eskdalemuir, Scotland. A Buddhist shrine provides a focal point for Buddhists when they are meditating, practising puja (worship) and for gatherings of Buddhists studying together. Shrines can vary from a small, simple shrine in the home or garden of a Buddhist, through to the large, ornate shrines or temples found across the globe. At the Samye Ling monastery, most visitors are westerners in this peaceful location for spiritual cleansing and often to find answers to their complicated, modern lives. And many here have had a troubled youth and are sometimes escaping a criminal past, who arrive in the Scottish wilderness for isolated retreat periods, for short-term spiritual relaxation.
