  • A Mouchi ethnic minority man returns to the old village to collect wood from his previous home to use for construction in the villages new location, Ban Mouchee Kao, Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. Rural communities are being impelled to move from swidden to sedentary cultivation and farmers are being exhorted to produce for markets rather than for family consumption. Forests are being logged, rivers are being dammed, large tracts of land are being given over to largely foreign investors, and mining is on the rise. Many villages have been forcibly displaced or moved or have voluntarily relocated in search of better conditions. Proponents argue these movements and consolidations increase the access of rural populations to roads, health and education services. Others might argue that it is to keep an eye on their activities and to foster or impel their incorporation into the emerging market economy.

  • Deep in the West Sussex countryside are a group of Territorial Army soldiers. They have stopped in a remote lane to consult their Ordnance Survey maps during a day of learning to navigate with maps and compasses. Over a weekend learn the skills needed to be part-time army volunteers known as the TA and have far to go. Together they look at maps and argue where they should go next. Looking on with mild amusement is their senior officer who accompanies them to assess their leadership skills and initiative. Behind them a road sign tells them the road ahead is a dead end to traffic. It is a very English summer landscape of lush green vegetation and grasses. The TA work as part of Britain’s reserve land forces. Together with the Regular Army they provide support at home and overseas including Iraq and Afghanistan. .

Kadare claimed political asylum in France, issuing statements in favour of democratisation: "Dictatorship and authentic literature are incompatible... The writer is the natural enemy of dictatorship." The anti-capitalist demonstration that saw protesters camp outside St Paul's Cathedral in London was brought to an end by bailiffs and police. Protesters staging Occupy London were refused permission by the Court of Appeal last week to challenge orders evicting them from the cathedral steps, where they had been living in tents since October 15 last year. The original and most noted is in the north-east corner of Hyde Park in London, England. Speakers there are allowed to speak as long as the police consider their speeches lawful. Contrary to popular belief, there is no immunity from the law, nor are any subjects forbidden, but in practice the police tend to be tolerant and therefore only intervene when they receive a complaint or if they hear profanity.

  • The A30 highway runs deep into the South-West of England - from Exeter in the county of Devon to Penzance in the narrow peninsular of Cornwall. On certain dates in the calendar routes like this, near the Cornish town of Bodmin, England, come to a standstill from the huge volume of cars and private vehicles, all heading down to costal resorts and better weather. We see here a huge tailback of traffic that is queueing along one side of the British dual-carriageway (two lanes in each direction) from close-up to the distance down and up a natural hill in this undulating landscape. The cars have edged forward are nose to tail for hours in summer heatwave and tempers fray, children arguing in the back and an otherwise relaxed holiday mood suddenly goes bad.
