  • Mr Massoudi, Director of the National Museum of Afghanistan pictured next to a statue recently restored after the Taliban smashed it to pieces. Overall the Taliban smashed 2000 museum exhibits and more famously two colossal Buddhas in Bamiyan ‘because they were "false idols" contrary to Islam. Mr Massouudi with the help of the international community has rebuilt and reopened his museum and is now seeking to recover and restore the many artifacts either looted in the civil war or smashed by the Taliban:<br />
"They took the decision that artefacts such as statues, or anything representing the human figure, was against Sharia Islam . Looking at statues as part of history, is not the same as worshiping them. It was an extremely sad time not just for me, but all museum staff , cultural and educated people in Afghanistan. They destroyed around 2000 artefacts.”

  • Still life of Bamboo made artefacts used in and around the village homes of the Apatani tribe. This tribe is one of hundreds of indigenous tribes scattered across India, particularly the north east. Their origins are from Mongolian nomadic tribes whom settled on the Ziro plateau, close to the Chinese border, they practice fixed agriculture as well as forestry, planting trees on the rim of the plateau as well as bamboo forests from which they derive fire wood, building their homes as well as using the bamboo for all manner of applications in their daily lives, cooking utensils and household containers amongst other uses. They carefully cultivate bamboo forests allowing them to grow, but not flower and die, as this would spell disaster for their very own existence. They also tend to their rice fields and live stock for what is mostly a subsistence economy. The Indian constitution recognizes over 500 indigenous tribes, which account for 8.5% of the total population

  • 30th Chief of the ancient clan MacLeod, Hugh MacLeod, 34, greets tourists and talks to the curator of Dunvegan Castle, Maureen Byers on the north-west corner of the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. Dunvegan has been the clan's traditional stronghold and ancestral home for 800 years which makes it the longest inhabited family home in Scotland. Now a visitor centre and place of pilgrimage for MacLeods from all over the world, it houses medieval artefacts from when Scotland was a wild and warring nation against the English. It has survived clan battles, extremes of feast and famine and profound social, political and economic changes in the Highlands. Originally designed to keep people out, Dunvegan Castle was first opened to the public in 1933. Visitors include Sir Walter Scott, Dr Johnson, Queen Elizabeth II and Emperor Akihito.
