  • It is late in the City of London, long after offices workers have left their desks in the capital's financial district. But some commuters like this young man have stayed behind in the Square Mile (the oldest, historic quarter first inhabited by the Romans) to drink with friends. He has consumned so much alcohol that he's passed-out, asleep on a bench on the platform at Bank station, immediately beneath the busy streets at the Bank of England. The station is otherwise deserted and is possibly just before - or after - the last train has left to take others home in the east end or the west.

Some of these ‘craft’ villages date back hundreds of years, whilst others are a more recent response to enable rural farmers to earn much needed extra income.

  • Lunchtime Londoners rest in summer sunshine beneath a crucifix, 15th August 2016 in the City of London, UK. • "Anywhere between 3-5am." A mother has brought her three and a half month-old infant into bed and comforts her new baby back to sleep in bed by holding her hand at dawn, after a broken night's rest. We see large adult's fingers encircling the tiny digits of the baby girl who is mercifully sound asleep again, instinctively aware of love and trust. It is a picture of protective parenthood, of a close bond between mother and child in a safe, cosy, warm and idyllic place within the loving family home. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

The camp included dining and recreation facilities, such as dance halls and sports fields. Over the past 75 years the camp has seen continuous use and development, in the mid-1980s and again in the late 1990s being subject to substantial investment and redevelopment. • We look down on to a sleeping auburn-haired boy sleeps soundly in his buggy during a daytrip to London. After a long day out with his family, the young lad has clearly had enough of the big city and sleeps soundly with his mouth gaping open. • A holiday couple sleep on portable beds in a particularly shabby corner of Bournemouth, a seaside resort in southern England. Above them are posters for this seedy part of the seaside resort on the south coast. Stars appearing in the summer season are an Elvis impersonator and the comedians Joe Longthorne and Les Dawson, who is appearing in Ray Cooney’s show called “Run For Your Wife!” The couple lie on their fold-up chairs, stretched out in a quiet corner below peeling plaster walls and beside a chained-up stack of deck chairs. The scene is a quintessentially English resort town that many from the 60s and 70s recall, when the Spanish package holiday suddenly became more attractive options, than the domestic week at home.

With the glory of old Portugal echoed in the architectural arch in the background and the statue of past monarchs in the bronze on the left, we see a modern city will all its problems of immigration and economic hardships for those unable to sustain a good life in this European nation. The Praça do Comércio or Commerce Square is located near the Tagus river, the square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira (Royal Ribeira Palace) until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake. • As a sleeping homeless man lies curled up in his sleeping bag on a central London pavement, two window cleaners have carefully placed their ladders at his feet to clean a Boots the chemist sign. Each wearing identical blue working overalls and each wiping the frontage with their left hands, the men are symbolic of the working man versus that of a homeless person without a job, prospects or perhaps a future. The wide gap between hopelessness and the pride of one's achievement is shown here on the sidewalk of modern-day Britain. London is home to some 50,000 homeless people whose place of rest can often be recesses and shop doorways where they seek sanctuary from the cold and street violence. On the opposite end of the wealth and social divides are those who seek work with a positive outlook on life.
