  • Iain Spink removing the Arbroath smokies from the fire pit on Auchmithie beach near Arbroath, Scotland. Arbroath smokies originated in Auchmithie, a small fishing village a few miles north of Arbroath. Only haddock can be used to produce an authentic 'Arbroath Smokie'. After cleaning, salting and washing, the fish are then tied by the tail in 'pairs' and hung on sticks. The smokie pit is then prepared. A hole is dug in the ground and a half whisky barrel is set into it, after lining with slates a hardwood fire of beech and oak is lit inside. The sticks of fish are then placed over the pit and a hessian cover allows the fire to breath and maintain the required heat.

  • A male barrel runner shields his eyes from the heat of the flames as a barrel is lit. The annual running of the tar barrels in Ottery St Mary, Devon is a tradition thought to go back as far as 500 years. Every November the 5th, crowds of thousands flock to this small town in the south west of England to see men, women and children run with burning barrels on their shoulders. Only people who were born in Ottery are allowed to participate, and they are proud of the tradition and work hard to keep it alive, even in the face of health and safety regulations. It is not competitive but rather a supportive act where they pass the barrels between themselves, encouraging everyone in the team to have a go.

  • Unique half-barrel vault in the Lay Brothers Refectory at Fontfroide Abbey near Narbonne, France. Fontfroide Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in France, situated 15 kilometers south-west of Narbonne. It was founded in 1093 by Aimery I, Viscount of Narbonne, but remained poor and obscure, and needed to be refounded by Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne. The abbey fought together with Pope Innocent III against the heretical doctrine of the Cathars who lived in the region. It was dissolved in 1791 in the course of the French Revolution. The premises, which are of very great architectural interest, passed into private hands in 1908, when the artists Gustave and Madeleine Fayet dAndoque bought it to protect the fabric of the buildings from an American collector of sculpture. They restored it over a number of years and used it as a centre for artistic projects. It still remains in private hands. Today it is open to paying guests.

  • The annual running of the tar barrels in Ottery St Mary, Devon is a tradition thought to go back as far as 500 years.

  • The annual running of the tar barrels in Ottery St Mary, Devon is a tradition thought to go back as far as 500 years.

  • Arranged on a hill with their barrels pointing upwards and lights glowing, weathered Challenger 1 tank crews of the 1st Batallion Royal Tank Regiment are stationary at Tidworth Barracks, England. Their turrets are all pointing to the viewer and the helmet heads of their commanders and drivers can be seen protruding from their respective places. The Royal Tank Regiment is an armoured regiment of the British Army but tanks were first used at Flers in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme in World War I. Challenger 1 was the main battle tank (MBT) of the British Army from 1983 until superseded by the Challenger 2 in the mid 1990s. Challenger 1 took part in Operation Desert Storm where the Iraqi forces failed to take a single vehicle out of combat while Challenger destroyed roughly 300 Iraqi tanks.
