  • Teenage students jump high on a basketball court to score a goal at the Gyosei International Japanese School, a boarding school for Japanese ex-pats opened in 1987 in Willen Park, Milton Keynes, England. Seen from an aerial perspective, we look down on these active and fit young men, whose sense of competition and fitness is played out below us. Leaping up to help win the ball that is about to be placed in the foreground basket, each of the seven boys try their utmost to help win or prevent the point, depending on the team members. The court looks new and well cared for at this ex-patriot school in the English Midlands

  • A solo teenage player takes a shot at the net on a basketball court at the Cyprea Marine Foods (CMF) processing factory on Himmafushi Island, Maldives in the Indian Ocean. It is dusk near the equator and soon dark. The landscape is barren except for some young trees on the waterfront where two people are walking in the cool tropical air. Seen in the last, darkening light of day, the player leaps upwards and his arm stays where his ball left his hand to roll around the ring. The man is enjoying some leisure time at the end of his working day, possibly an employee of CMF who handle newly-caught tuna fish for export to the EU and the UK's supermarket food industry.

  • Although we see the arms and bodies of three young African American men jumping high for a basketball, there is a fourth arm trying to make contact with the ball as all four males leap high at the basket ball net which has just bounced off the ring, scoring no points. We see the face of one black man whose white teeth and silver-coloured necklace shine in the sunshine. He looks up to watch the other hands fight for the ball’s possession as the teams battle for supremacy. In the background is a mural painted on the court’s wall showing a running dribbling basket ball player who seems to be leaping over the head of one player in the foreground. There are large tattooed deltoid shoulder muscles and masses of energy on show in this scene of ultimate determination and desire to win.

  • The lower legs of two boys playing basketball, partially intersected by a poster of a crowd - in a south London park. We look through the wire fence of this public space in southeast London in the borough of Lewisham. The faces and bodies of the audience look towards the viewer, a crowd of spectators perhaps created by CGI at some sort of event. And the juxtaposed lower limbs of the boys on the court are in reality playing their own game but still merge with the image, a trick of the eye especially as the legs seem to be matched to individuals.

  • An unidentified youth is seen climbing over a high security fence into a derelict basketball court in the Notting Hill area of West London, England. Half-way over the wire netting, the young man has put his right leg over the top to haul himself over the high barrier. In the distance we see the graffiti left by other kids, sprayed on to the concrete walls of the former sports place. This is an inner-city environment where lawless youth crime is prevalent.
