  • An out of focus post with a light bulb attached, shines in the bright daylight with the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Cocoa beach is on Florida's so-called Space Coast, a resort of beaches, clubs, seafood restaurants and motels that came to life during the 1960s due to America's space program. NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center is located approximately 15 miles away. The Atlantic Ocean is flat calm in settled weather and the horizon is clear and well-defined with a ship just visible on the right side. Focus is on the sea rather than the post and the light bulb which look like a surreal addition to the landscape. Cocoa Beach served as a playground for many of the astronauts and NASA space industry workers and contractors during the heyday of the space race. After manned space flights, the town held astronaut parades. Before there was a "Silicon Valley," Cocoa Beach and other surrounding towns were full of the best and brightest technical minds around.

  • Next to a beach bather, water pours from an outlet pipe on a tourist beach on Coloane island Cheoc Van beach, Macau, China. With his face towards the course sand, the bather lies with his head towards a large wall, whose large stone blocks accommodate the pipe at the bottom. Apart from a pair of brief swimming trunks and a sun hat, he lies with ankles crossed, as if in paradise. But this seemingly industrial landscape is far from the idyllic place other tourists might wish to frequent. We do not know how filthy or indeed how pure, this water that pours out from the ground is, but the suspicion is that the pollution may affect human health. The once-Portuguese colony of Macau is now administered by China as a Special Economic Region (SER) and the official languages are Portuguese and Chinese.

The beach in the distance is largely deserted so the kids have lots of space to fulfill their games.

  • Sitting on garden seats, a seaside couple enjoy ice creams near broken building materials in the resort of Sandown. A decaying pile of rubble and building bricks have been left on the ground where visitors and tourists sit on their holiday making for a grim and depressing experience and dystopic landscape. This is the seaside resort of Sandown on the Isle of Wight, twinned (jumelée in French) with the town of Tonnay-Charente, in the western French département of Charente-Maritime. Its American twin town is St. Pete Beach, Florida.

  • A young man sits on a sandbank beneath a sun brolley. With legs and feet protruding the man is in the middle of a sand maze constructed for the London Thames Festival, the annual celebration of all things related to London life and culture. The maze has been trodden by pairs of feet to create concentric circles that ultimately lead to the centre. Seen only at low-tide on the river's foreshore near Gabriel's Wharf, the stretch of fine, natural sandy beach is used by Londoners to sample a touch of seaside on fine summer days and was popular with Victorians before the arrivals of railways taking them to the coast. Nowadays the Thames is much cleaner after more stringent environment policies and the sand in some places is pure.
