  • Having just unearthed more bodies from layers of volcanic ash and pumice, an archaeologist's assistant pauses for a cigarette, kneeling beside a victim of the AD79 eruption of Mount Versuvius over the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. Buried beneath huge amounts of toxic material this person was suffocated and crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be removed from this site on top of a villa roof where, it is calculated, this citizen was one of the last to die, having climbed 4 metres above ground level to await its fate. The Italian man ears a red t-shirt and holds a pick that has scraped and brushed away the soil to reveal the human form which also shows another body beneath. Others litter the rooftop too proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.

  • The lower legs of two boys playing basketball, partially intersected by a poster of a crowd - in a south London park. We look through the wire fence of this public space in southeast London in the borough of Lewisham. The faces and bodies of the audience look towards the viewer, a crowd of spectators perhaps created by CGI at some sort of event. And the juxtaposed lower limbs of the boys on the court are in reality playing their own game but still merge with the image, a trick of the eye especially as the legs seem to be matched to individuals.

  • A workman clears away old shop fittings and then some discarded sexist ad posters that lie on a London street after being removed from a refurbished shop construction site. Yellow steps ladders, the red exterior of the shop make for prime colours alongside the torn and water soaked posters, the faces and nude bodies of the women showing before being swept away.

  • Mosaic representations of Roman celestial bodies in the House of the Planetarium at Italica, Near Seville. With the sun in the centre, we see Jupiter in the foreground and the Moon, Mars (with a helmet), Mercury and Saturn. The city of Italica (Spanish: Itálica; north of modern day Santiponce, 9 km NW of Seville, Spain) was founded in 206 BC by the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus in order to settle Roman soldiers wounded in the Battle of Ilipa, where the Carthaginian army was defeated during the Second Punic War. The name Italica bound the colonia to their Italian origins. Italica was the birthplace of Roman emperor Trajan.

  • Wearing beachwear and topless in shorts are the beautiful people of Los Angeles’ famous Venice Beach. A dashing athletic male specimen, all six-pack muscles, a dark tan with white trainers, socks and leaning on a bike, flirts with a young woman whose perfect body is facing away from us, allowing us a peek at her bottom and long, slender legs and rollerblades. She wears a very small pink bikini and a tiny back-pack in the west coast sunshine. There is sexuality and machismo here between the sexes where exhibitionists and extroverts display their confidence and talents, the guy’s body language showing and facial expression giving off a keen interest in this woman’s female form.

As proof of how the fashion and retail industries see the perfect woman's form, we see a skinnier look, the proportions of a curvy rather than a rounded female shape. Womens' groups however see this as unrepresentative, undermining how women see themselves portrayed accurately in the shop window and therefore in everyday life.

  • From the side of a road in south London, we see a group of naked female mannequins, standing and sitting with furniture on the forecourt of an office supplies business. A clearance sign stands partly-obscured but one’s attention is to the physiques of each model that tends to signify whichever the fashion industry has decreed is the ‘look’ of the decade – whether buxom or skinny – and shop windows are therefore occupied with the clothing shapes of the day. Some women stand in that classic fashion pose, with arms at the side and one leg in front of the other, or sitting with one leg elegantly crossed: All designed to make the clothes they wear look attractive.

The legs of a person climbs the bright yellow stairs and a contractor in a matching green t-shirt to the colanders walks underneath. Southbank's events (on the south bank of the Thames) are a summer-long Festival of the World made up of many smaller festivals and weekends. Together they create our story showing how art is changing the globe in surprising and exciting ways.

  • During an August heatwave, the population of Brixton and many others from all over London, bask in the glorious weather at the Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, South London. The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see two men of Afro-carribean origin who have a corner of the Lido to themselves. One wears a towel wrapped around his lower-body and sits, arms folded with a look of territorial superiority while the other applies sun lotion to his leg. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design but their colourful towels and possessions are spread out on the paving stones along with childrens' toys including an Action Man toy soldier who is also tanning himself. It is a scene of fun for all ages and backgrounds. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond. It is now a Grade II listed building

  • A small group of men are together on the beach just opposite to Ocean Drive on Miami Beach. Two of them are in the foreground and each wear sun glasses, each holding cigars that may be Cuban in origin, a popular source of tobacco leaf in this region of America. They have recently been immersed in the sea and water drips down their rather flabby bodies with the gentleman on the left sucking on his cigar with a belly that expands around his tanned midriff. It is intensely bright, sunny day on the sand, seen behind. Flash has emphasized the water drips and the male sweat and we also see a very clear blue tropical sky.

  • "The week of Dunblane." Mindful of the Dunblane massacre that week, a baby massage class takes place at a health clinic in south London. Spread across a matt are six babies of varying ages and sizes whose mums are tenderly stroking their infants' bodies and senses with soft, gentle touches over the head, face, shoulders, arms, chest, stomach and legs which is a recommended way of tactile communication between mother and child. Some children are looking up into their mothers' faces, others are looking elsewhere and one is upset but comforted. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A few miles from the finish line, this long-distance runner has stopped in agony to lean against the walls beneath Tower Bridge during th London Marathon, England. Pushing against the solid wall and stretching his cramped leg muscles, he grimaces in pain as other runners speed past on their way completing their personal race. Pushed to his limits, this man needs to continue a few more Kilometres to claim his medal and to claim victory. But he still has to overcome the pain of an overworked body. When glycogen runs low, the body must then burn stored fat for energy, which does not burn as readily. When this happens, the runner will experience dramatic fatigue. This is called "hitting the wall".
