• A father and daughter wait for the man’s wife to return with their car after the family have returned from a booze-cruise from Dover to Calais. Back in England, the dad sits on crates of Fosters, John Smiths and Stella Artois lagers purchased in a French supermarket, considerably cheaper in Euros, than in Pounds. Waiting patiently with their merchandise, the two sit and stand beneath a road traffic sign telling adult pedestrians to hold on to their children as Dover is a busy sea port, where heavy trucks and fast-moving vehicles make it dangerous for the young. Booze cruises are popular ways of stocking parties inexpensively though with exchange rates fluctuating to make the Euro’s value against the British Pound, the booze cruise market slowed.

 • In the shadow of 1 Canada Square, the iconic Canary Wharf tower in London's Docklands stands as an icon for Thatcherite Britain when the good times, prosperity and economic upturns seemed unshakeable. Four work colleagues stand under a hot lunchtime sun during a summer heatwave. In their shirtsleeves the men each hold pints of refreshing lager, all having removed their dark jackets to enjoy the company of a flirtatious female who appears to be flirting with an older male companion. The sky is blue and the five are care-free to any future economic uncertainty.

 • Cajun dancing in Freds Lounge on 28th February 2020 in Mamou, Louisiana, United States. Freds Lounge rarely advertises, yet the pub that is open only on Saturday mornings is known worldwide. The small town of Mamou is one of the last bastions of Cajun culture. On the outside, Freds place looks like any ordinary red brick beer joint. But promptly at 9:15 on Saturday mornings the music and dancing starts igniting a two-hour radio show transmitted throughout the area. Freds Lounge is unique in many ways. For one thing we serve alcohol at eight in the morning. Even for us Cajuns that unique, Libby, the owner, says with a laugh. She recommends starting with a spicy Bloody Mary. Thats our breakfast. We call it Freds omelet.

 • Rows of alcohol spirit bottles hanging in an English pub in London. A pub is a drinking establishment and is a fundamental part to British culture and is often the focal point to a local community. Many of these hard liquors are offering a special promotion to have a double measure of alcohol for a very small price, this type of promotion has been blamed for encouraging people to binge drink (heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time) and is a serious public health issue in the United Kingdom. Binge drinking is associated with a profound social harm, economic costs as well as increased disease burden.

 • Drunk Marine, Friday night as the marines visited Butlins holiday camp Skegness 1982 giving a disply to the crowd and encouraging recruitment during the Falklands war. Butlins Skegness is a holiday camp located in Ingoldmells near Skegness in Lincolnshire. Sir William Butlin conceived of its creation based on his experiences at a Canadian summer camp in his youth and by observation of the actions of other holiday accommodation providers, both in seaside resort lodging houses and in earlier smaller holiday campsThe camp began opened in 1936, when it quickly proved to be a success with a need for expansion. The camp included dining and recreation facilities, such as dance halls and sports fields. Over the past 75 years the camp has seen continuous use and development, in the mid-1980s and again in the late 1990s being subject to substantial investment and redevelopment. In the late 1990s the site was re-branded as a holiday resort, and remains open today as one of three remaining Butlins resorts.

 • Bottles of wine and spirits stacked on a shelf, awaiting sale in a London off-license.
The term off-License applies to the licence granted to establishments allowing them to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises. The term derived from public houses, pubs, which possessed an off licence as part of their regular licence, allowing them to sell sealed alcoholic drinks (e.g., unopened bottles of wine) for consumption elsewhere.

 • Glastonbury Festival 2014.
Shangri-La is the after-hours epicentre of Glastonbury Festival, a largely indescribable, ephemeral and interactive world that really comes to life after dark.
Burgers, booze and breakfast. The legendary Deluxe Diner was open 24hrs throughout the festival, with homemade food by day and old time party tunes by night.
Unique among festivals, Shangri-la has a central narrative that pins it all together, it evolves year by year (a bit like Star Wars). All contributors respond to this narrative, and add to it via their installations, venues and performances. When it all comes together on site the audience have a wholly immersive world to become lost in with a myriad of places to explore.
Exploration and discovery is an important aspect of Shangri-la. A maze of covered alleys is riddled with nano-venues, performers and installations, artworks and hidden doors.
In 2014 Shangri-La explored the way we create heavens and hells for ourselves.
