  • Ageing, elderly parents sunbathe with a teenage daughter as the father oddly faces a brick wall while sat in his wheelchair. Looking bored with the family holiday, the young lady of about 18 years of age, sits on a concrete block, the highlight of a vacation at home in Britain, rather than a package trip in mainland Europe. The father has a tanned back but sits facing the brick wall in an eccentric, odd way of sunbathing. He is obviously disabled and can’t reach a beach via steps and perhaps this is why they have opted for this rather desolate corner of the seaside town resort.

  • The words 'No Dumping' writing on an urban brick wall in the south London borough of Lewisham, SE5. Painted by hand on to London stock bricks dating perhaps, to the late-Victorian or early 20th century period, we see the writing asking local residents and business owners not to fly-tip in this unauthorised location. Councils like Lewisham will prosecute those found to be dumping waste and litter. Amusingly, we also notice that the letter P has been empasised with the use of red.

  • Beneath an ugly breeze block concrete wall, a couple are enjoying their holiday in the English seaside town of Paignton, Devon. Sitting in striped deckchairs they are both curiously touching their own genital areas between their legs, perhaps both scratching an itch. The lady in sunglasses wearing a floral dress on the left looks guilty while her topless male partner appears more amused by the interruption. In this depressing corner of Paignton, also called the English Riviera, the grey construction behind them is a grim reminder of what it is often like to holiday in one's own home country where few exotic luxuries are found. Such squalor is unfortunately common around the UK and a reason why people take their vacations abroad. Even the grass below them is bare with weeds growing and soil at the foot of the wall.

  • A decaying Victorian brick wall and present-day graffiti in London's east end. After decades of grime and dirty air, a drain pipe has turned green from leaking water and moss and algae has been allowed to accumulate on brickwork and weeds to grow upwards to make this a scene of urban dereliction and decay.

  • Four friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Bare except for their costumes, they stretch and yawn, read a newspaper and lean against a railing all the while swapping anecdotes and complaining grumpily about the state of the world near a brick wall that retains heat. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • Blue refuse bags have been left at the foot of a matching blue brick wall. In this side street of a south London suburb, we see the garbage lying on the pavement (sidewalk) surrounded by autumnal maple leaves. The wall in the background has been roughly painted, the bricks starting to crack. But the picture is about the similar colours of the wall to the Southwark borough council bags that are provided free for residents wishing to dispose of green garden waste only. If you live in a house or flat at street level you will have a blue box and bag for your recycling. In most cases, if you have a green rubbish bin you will also be able to use a blue box and bag.

  • An inspection by the Thames Water Utilities sewer cleaning team looks closely at Victorian-era brick wall linings of the Fleet Rivers Victorian-built storm sewer of Blackfriars, beneath the streets of the City of London, on 19th June 1994, in London, England. Discarded fats from restaurants congeal in sewer networks leading to blocked pipework. Sewer men shovel the deposits and bring them in vats to the surface. In the early 19th century the River Thames was practically an open sewer, with disastrous consequences for public health in London, including numerous cholera epidemics with the The Great Stink of 1858 a turning point. Intercepting sewers constructed between 1859 and 1865 were fed by 450 miles 720 km of main sewers that in turn conveyed the contents of some 13,000 miles 21,000 km of smaller local sewers using 318m bricks, 880,000 cubic yards of concrete and mortar and excavation of over 3.5m tonnes of earth.

  • On a brick wall is a painted red hand that grips an Armalite automatic weapon which has been painted on to a street wall of a house off the protestant Shankhill Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The red hand is actually better-known as The Red Hand Defenders (RHD), a Northern Irish paramilitary group formed in 1998 and composed largely of Protestant hardliners from loyalist groups observing a cease-fire. It is composed of members of the Ulster Defence Association (largely those who once belonged to the now disbanded 2nd Battalion, C Company) and Loyalist Volunteer Force, most of whom are still part of the latter organisation.

Looking up we see a detail of the bright reds of the banner and balloons plus electrical and telephony wiring tacked along the bricks on Walworth in the London borough of Southwark. The depressed wall shows us the opposite of the perfect Valentine ideal.

They are near a back alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The older, taller girl is of Asian-descent and the younger is White British who hides her face with her top. Both are facing other activity in this inner-city street where there are 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre and home to deprived families. Few of these back-to-backs exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • Sprayed marks on the outside wall of an industrial estate, marked for redevelopment in Loughborough Junction, a site for regeneration and gentrification of luxury flats in the south London borough of Lambeth. Criss-crossed over the brick wall are the aerosol markings to show a future demolition crew where to cut through this outer boundary. The gentrification process is spreading across many London boroughs, erasing industrial property, the home of small businesses and trades like carpentry - in favour of exclusive homes that command large deposits and rents that local Londoners cannot afford.

This early 20th century building is now vacant and close to becoming derelict. The boarding up of its access points help to make it secure from illegal entry. • Graffiti sprayed on a rendered brick wall proclaims that a higher authority ‘Can’t evict our ideas’. This message of resistance by the underdogs of a moral majority appears on a part of wasteland in the Yorkshire city of Bradford, where the residents of an estate near the city centre have been forcibly removed to make space for a new development. Before their migration, the anonymous, downtrodden people were desperate enough to write this piece of anarchical philosophy that might be seen as a metaphor for a class war against the establishment by The People; the working classes otherwise known in Marxist ideology, as the Proletariat – a kind of thought from the (Orwellian) novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell.

  • Four estate agent's property boards advertise their names and numbers in a London housing estate, each representing vendors selling their houses and flats for a set commission in the housing market. Above the signs is the pink blossom from a cherry tree whose branches hang over the temporary information boards. The term originally referred to a person responsible for managing a landed estate, while those engaged in the buying and selling of homes were "House Agents", and those selling land were "Land Agents". However, in the 20th century, "Estate Agent" started to be used as a generic term, perhaps because it was thought to sound more impressive. Estate agent is roughly synonymous in the United States with the term real estate broker.

  • Working in a dark corner of Desford Brickworks, the factory owned by Hanson Brick in Leicestershire, a labourer pats his clay aggregate into a clod (also known as a clot or warp) a lump of kneaded clay formed into a rough brick shape by hand in preparation for being thrown into the mould (or mold) and shaped once again with a stock. He will then skim off the surplus with the bow - a wire stretched between the ends of a curved wooden rod used for removing excess clay from the mould, which hangs on the wall by a nail. The stage afterwards is the firing in the kiln. Obviously the mechanisation of brick making endangers the careers of skilled craftsmen like this man. <br />
Bricks may be made from clay, shale, soft slate, calcium silicate, concrete, or shaped from quarried stone but Clay is the most common material.
