  • Fisherman Algun Villarosa (17) and his brother Gunray (11) prepare fishing nets before going fishing, Talisay, Santa Fe, Bantayan Island, The Philippines. On November 6 2013 Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and was one of the most powerful storms to ever make landfall. The storm had a devastating impact on the fishing and seaweed industry and caused extensive environmental damage which will have a long term impact on ecosystems and the communities who rely on them for food and employment. Three-quarters of the island’s population of about 136,000 depend on fishing as their main source of income. Thousands lost their boats and equipment in the storm. • Original 'Blues brother' style Dodge Monaco police car at the Shack Up Inn, Clarksdale. If you want to explore Clarksdale and the Blues country in true retro fashion the best place to do so is by staying at the Shack Up Inn. In The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America, author Nicholas Lemman describes how, on Oct. 2, 1944, a crowd of 3,000 people quietly watched the first public demonstration of the mechanical cotton picker at Hopson's plantation in Clarksdale. At best, wrote Lemman, a skilled field hand could pick 20 pounds of cotton in an hour; the mechanical picker picked 1,000 pounds. Hopson calculated that a bale of cotton (500 pounds) cost $39.41 to pick by hand and $5.26 by machine. It wasn't too hard to foresee the future.

  • A giant eye from a construction site hoarding appears to be watching pedestrians and their long shadows on Neal Street, London. Reminiscent of an Orwellian 'Big Brother' scenario, where in the book 1984, the State is seen to be spying on its citizens, we see the portion of the large face's eye open and gazing at the passers-by who walk past unaware of their secret surveillance. It is an autumn afternoon and long shadows stretch across the pavement as the pedestrians get on with everyday life - activities that may require reporting on by those needing to know what the People are doing, saying and thinking.

  • Two children lay down on the ground at the foot of a solid dry stone wall, up in the hills of the area of northern England known as the Dales, near Settle, Yorkshire. The two brother and sister have their faces against the rocks that serve as boundaries and enclosures for farmers and land owners. These walls were built by tradesmen called Wallers, a dying tradition and skill. Dry stone walls are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. The wall is held up by special construction methods and by its weight. The stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip. They are a legacy of the movement towards enclosure of common farming and grazing land as English society moved away from medieval feudalism. Model released.

  • Seen from a low angle, we see a big sister turning around to see what her younger brother is up to as they sit back-to-back in a park in London, England. The boy is actually playing with the girl's toy windmill, turning its sails proving a fun way of passing part of a summer's afternoon in this inner-city park. His sister is unimpressed however and she is about to snatch her own property back - not because she needs it, but simply because it is hers. These siblings are having to learn sharing each other's things and as a five and three year-old are finding out, it's a hard lesson. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • On a wooden boardwalk that stretches across a sandy beach landscape, a young girl runs at full speed away from her mother and younger brother who walk along this walkway on the beach at Calais, France. It is low-tide, hazy winter sunshine makes soft shadows on the sand but there are few people out in the cold beyond except for a family in the surf approximately 200 yards away in the distance. Half-way back to the shore is a lone lifebelt attached to its pole in case of emergency. This near-deserted beach is an idyllic and tranquil place, allowing children to let off steam. We look down on the small girl who throws her head back in a rage, mouth wide open, after not getting what she wants. But in the background, her younger sibling is oblivious to her emotional outburst and gets on with playing at the foot of a children’s garden slide - in an innocent world of his own. • From the darkened room of Coventry council's CCTV control room, we see over the shoulder of a council camera operator spying on innocent pedestrians and a view of a shopping precinct. Citizens and passers-by go about their own business unaware that their movements are being watched by camera lenses and their human eyes and security personnel. Other monitor screens date the pictures as 24th May 1999 when Coventry was the most-watched city in Britain. The council controversially maintains it deters petty crime but the population disagrees, saying it is obtrusive and symptomatic of a Big Brother-type Orwellian police state.

  • A portrait of two rat catchers in a rice field in Vinh An village which specialises in rat catching, Hung Yen province, Vietnam. The process of catching rats involves a dog to sniff the rat holes to see if any are there and a bamboo trap placed down the hole to catch them when they try to escape and a lot of digging. Up to 20 rats can be caught from a single hole. The rat catchers then remove the rats canine teeth to stop them biting and place them alive in a basket. They are killed and cooked at home and are a special dish in this area, particularly for weddings.
