  • The Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti performs in London during the free Party in the Park concert to celebrate his 30 years in opera. A crowd of 100,000 stood in the London rain to watch Pavarotti perform 20 arias by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and Wagner. VIPs the Princess of Wales, Prime Minister John Major and Michael Caine got soaked in heavy rain along with everyone else sitting on the grass cowering beneath tarpaulins. We see the rotund Operatic maestro in full flow, belting out an aria while dressed in formal tails and wastecoat and holding his customary scarf that he uses to dab the sweat from his brow. Pavarotti helped bring an otherwise high-brow artform to the ordinary Man after the BBC used his rendition of Nessun Dorma to theme their World Cup TV coverage. This lead the way to Opera reaching the Common Man in Britain.

  • Hot gondolier wipes his brow during a heatwave, to the amusement of tourists, in Venice, Italy. The first mention ever of an Italian gondola was in Venice in 1094 and, of course, there have been gondoliers as long as there have been gondolas - so it’s one of the oldest professions in the world. Until August 2010, there had never been a single woman gondolier in Venice as licences were always passed down to male family members. Current prices (2015) is 80 Euros for a 40-minute journey (earning them approx 130,000 Euros a year) along the waterways of this old city but rarely do gondoliers wear their straw hat.

  • On a rocky ridge in Kataluwa in Sri Lanka, a langur monkey is silhouetted against the blue skies as it wonders in search of fruits and leaves. Langur means 'having a long tail' and the name suits the animal perfectly. These lean bodied, bushy eye browed monkeys are also commonly known as the Wandura in Sri Lanka. In Indian mythology, the Langur (or Hanuman Langur as it is sometimes called) carries its distinct look because Hanuman, a monkey warrior, burnt his hands and face trying to rescue Lord Rama's wife.
