  • During a time-exposure of a few seconds, the ambient neon and natural evening light of Miami Beach's Ocean Drive are mixed together to give an atmospheric mood of vitality, bustle and excitement in this tropical city. The vertical-aligned name of the famous Colony Hotel is seen through the darkened window of an SUV (4x4). Glowing pinks and blues are vivid in this scene where beautiful people and expensive cars cruise along slowly, each parading bodywork and personality. Palm trees sway about in the coastal breeze, blurring during the exposure and making them ghostly against the fading sky of early evening. This is vibrant district of Miami, Florida. The place to hang-out and be noticed.

  • Two Catholic nuns from the Asia region have walked from St Peter's Square in Vatican City, though Piazza Pio XII and are continuing down the wide street called Via della Conciliazione. Dressed in fine religious gowns complete with beautiful sashes around the waste they walk in step past a shop called Galleria Savelli that sells religious trinkets and other tourist ephemera. Near the centre of the picture are the postcards of the Cisteen chapel and of Pope John Paul II who is seen waving at various Papal events. • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • A spread of old Polish Zloty bank notes are spread out in the hands of a private market trader in Central Warsaw. His arms appear from the bottom left of frame and we can see a dozen or so notes of 2000 and 5000 and other denominations in an arc, held together with both thumbs. In the back ground and out of focus is the hustle and bustle of a summer's day at this market at a football stadium where Polish citizens come to sell and buy their possessions in the hope of making a little money to support meagre incomes. Women are inspecting clothing and materials on a stall in the open-air, under a bright sun. On the front-facing note is the medieval ruler Mieszko I though these notes were phased out in 1995 when hyperinflation forced, the currency to undergo redenomination.

The Pillars of the Bank of England can just be seen left as pedestrians either stride past on the pavement, wait for another service or board the number 8 that is bound for Old Ford & Bow Church in the east end. Meanwhile, in the cab of his bus, the driver's hands and chest of the 11 destined for Fulham Broadway in the west can be seen in the sun, as he continues his journey in the opposite direction. Advertising is present on each mode of transport too: A travel ad for Rome (with a picture of St. Peter's in the Vatican) and for two west end musicals - Cyrano de Bergerac and Lost in Yonkers. • It is morning in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India and on the streets around the Writers' Building, a busy fruit market is in full swing. Against the wall however, a dying skill is being shown: A man sits with his back to the bustle of the street and is hand-typing letters for those unable to write their own correspondence with his own battered typewriter. Working as a freelance typist, the man transcribes the hand-written words for a customer before the days of home PC or laptop. The Writers' Building (Mahakaran in Bengali) is the secretariat building of the State Government of West Bengal in India. The Writers' Building originally served as the office for writers of the British East India Company, hence the name. Designed by Thomas Lyon in 1780, it received its impressive Corinthian façade, an example of the Neo-Renaissance style, in 1889.

  • The chef Marco Pierre-White works in the kitchens of the Hyde Park Hotel. Waving a sharp knife in his right hand, he is about to carve a joint of red meat amid the heat and bustle of his busy work area. Overseeing a small army of sous-chefs and waiters, he rules his roost though it is his reputation that needs preserving. Marco Pierre White (born 11 December 1961) is a British celebrity chef, restaurateur and television personality. He is noted for his contributions to contemporary international cuisine and his exceptional culinary skills. White has been dubbed the first celebrity chef enfant terrible of the UK restaurant scene and the Godfather of modern cooking. • From a slightly raised viewpoint we are looking up Bishopsgate Street in the oldest area of Britain's capital, the Square Mile in the City of London. As traffic is at a standstill when lights are red, pedestrians to and fro across the scene, blurring as they negotiate crossings and traffic islands mid-way across this old Roman and medieval highway that travels north-south in what is now the city's financial district. Buses can be seen in the far distance too adding to the general bustle of a busy metropolis. The highway tends to zigzag into the distance and with the foreshortening of a long lens, appears to have a compressed perspective.

  • A downcast male pedestrian walks through reflected light shining from a City of London office building. Walking slowly at his own speed, the person looks downbeat, a downward-looking character in the bustle of the modern city. He walks past the pool of bright reflective lighting the City of London, known as the Square Mile after its ancient Roman walled past. They will continue through Royal Exchange Buildings in EC2, the heart of the capital's financial district.

  • Seen through the window of an amusement arcade in London's Gerrard Street, Chinatown, we see the colourful neon lights that garishly shine from behind the glass. Beyond is the hustle and bustle of daily life in this famous street of London's Chinese community. We are slightly confused as to what is inside and what is out. We see the Georgian architecture reflected from behind and to the left is a slot-machine game called Hi-Roller which suggests the use of dice in this gambling activity. Passers-by can be seen outside, making their way past the many restaurants and businesses. In the middle of the scene is a yellow sign positioned by the Metropolitan Police warning against pickpockets as this area of the West End is known for petty crime.

  • A young mother holds up her daughter to insert a letter into a post box at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. The girl half-climbs up the red pillar box and tries to get the postage item into the narrow slot which is an even tighter fit because of security considerations - avoiding larger and potentially dangerous packages from entering the airport's postal system. In the background we see the bustle of a departures concourse where British Airways passengers walk past after having checked-in at BA's hub terminal. At a cost of £4.3 billion, Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).
